I'll installing a check valve in my bilge line to prevent back flow when heavy in back. my question to the board is should the valve be located next to the bilge pump or next to the thru-hull fitting.there's about four feet of 1-1/8" hose. the valve take about 5-7 pounds of pressure to open. so make sure and have enough head pressure to open the valve a bought a new pump. Its an 1100 gph auto. platinum series with some kind of learning chip in it. should be plenty of pump. i use this boat all winter long so the chance of freezing is a possibility.

I think you should check with the manufacture of the bilge pump. My pump will not alow backflow.

You could also use a siphon breaking loop like used for the fuel tank vent. Make a circle out of the hose near the overboard fitting. The top of the loop should be several inches above the overboard fitting.

Your bilge pump may be a large capacity but it is probably not high pressure. Unrestricted discharge on the pump is the key to acheiving the rated gallons per hour. I don't know about you but I want the pump to go wide open when I need it.

do you know the make, model, i was unaware they were out there. i paid $80.00 for the 1100 auto.
$12.00 for the check valve. all can still go back for a diffrent pump

I took an old 21' valco and completely revamped it. i put a deck over the back 9' and placed a livewell, 30 gal. fuel tank. battery and lots of storage. the problem is it sits low in the water with very little freeboard. i put everything under the deck to make a totally open area to to battle with what ever big may hook up. its a great idea however with a couple problems. one being the bilge outlet and the livewell overflow. also if i run the livewell i can't drain the well because the drain is also below surface. i place a ball valve in line to prevent it from filling. to fix that i'm planning on placing another livewell pump on the inside of the tank pumping the water out. this way if i use it as a fish box i can bleed them out in it and run fresh water over the fish to rinse out blood and clots. i also placed a blaster pump under the deck for wash down of slim and blood or spilled soda's or to squrit whatever. so the bilge see's a lot of water. to find out more about a anti-back flow pump may be the ticket. however all set aside i agree with you 100% on a full bore pump. keep my troubles in mind.
thanks
