I have a new Skookum Steelheader 10ft guilde model. My question is rod holder and rod storage? On rod holders, I know that you can by a strap around fly fishing model from Scotty's but I do not know if it will work. I want to pull plugs with this boat from time to time and need something a little more strudy and made for casting reels. I once saw some guys in small kick boats on the river with bent PVC pipe screwed to frame along the side , kinda of cut to get more snuggly around the frame, then bent up and screwed to the oar stand with a standard rod holder just stuck into the end of the pipe, seems like a okay idea maybe. What is my frame made out of and can I just have a piece of like frame material with the right dihameter to again just sick the base of the rod holder into this addition? Any direction / pictures you can share with me? Also I one of those guys with a rod for this technique, and a rod for that technique. I was thinking of taking a 7ft piece of 4in black PVC cut the half of the tube of in 80% of it's length but leaving the ends and whole pipe and then straping it to the frame. This way I could have my rods still in one piece (ready to fish) stored away on one side(left side) and my skookum supplied bags filled with tackle on both sides and my rod holder set up on the other side(right side). Again any suggestions? One last thing I live in the Portland area and fish the streams on the NW coast, Clackamas, Sandy, and the Deschutes, with that said what pound anchor would be enough 5,10 or what?

Thanks for you help and I can always just e-mail you direct.

Ok. I've shown Os these and he liked them and started using them. You don't want to use the scotty's, an extra strap in the water just means more of a chance to snag on something underwater. The PVC rod holder sounds ok, but Cabela's has an adjustable mount that a fishon rod holder will fit on. Then you can fit this mount onto your frame and screw it down. You can unscrew it and put it on anypart of your frame you wish. If I could find one of my catalogs I'd tell you an exact catalog and page number. I think Os has a link to it.

Your steelheader frame is made of galvanized steel. I'd HIGHLY suggest you getting at least a 15lb anchor, if not a 20lb. You'd be surprised how well these things cut water and how they'll want to flow with the current. I ran a 15lb on my 9' steelheader and would sometimes drift a bit. When I ran the 20lb I was solid.

Holding rods is a good question. I have some rubber rod mounts that keep my rods lashed down. You can run PVC tubes on your boat, but they could get in the way. I don't think there's really a good way to support your rods in a boat. One day we'll figure out the perfect way. Maybe run the PVC tube under the frame in the dead area between the floor and upper rails. May be best option.

Any other questions shoot me an email.

Steelheader69,

I failed to mention that I did buy and try a Scotty's rail mount system. To that you can connect a extentsion which is about 8in long then finally the rod holder (about $35 altogether). The system would be perfect except it fits up to a 1 inch rail, and the Steelheader frame is about 1 1/8 inches in diaghameter, so the scews do not align. It sounds like the Cabela's system must fit from your experience, but doulbe checking?

Yes, the Cabela's system works. It's designed to fit just about any diameter metal you want to put it on. The nice thing is you can put your scotty rod holder you bought onto the Cabela's mount. It has multiple screw holes to accept many different rod holders. The mount costs about $13 and works great. I used it on my Steelheader with no problem. Nicest thing of all you can mount it ANYWHERE you have an open piece of pipe. I also use them on my big 16' boat too.

Good luck
