Guys, you have got me drooling over here. I would love to build my own rods but don't have any idea where to start. From the outside looking in it is pretty intimidating.
I know the feeling of catching something on a homemade spinner and would love to add to that with my own rod.
Where should I start? Any classes around?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Find a guy near you to get you addicted. Its really easy stuff. Get Amato's book on basic rod building and read up, or visit Mudhole dot com and check out their rod building 101 links. You do not need a bunch of expensive gear, ya it makes it easier, but to get started all you need is some v blocks - card board boxes will do. Start with a simple project and catch a fish on it, but please do not hold me (or anyone else for that matter) responsible for the addiction that will result.

Yeah, once you start, you will soon realize you have more than enough fishing rods to use in several lifetimes.

I was reading on another forum that Lamiglas Inc. does have one of those classes once a year. I believe those are free too. You do have to purchase your own blank and components and they walk to you through. If you don't mind driving to Woodland, WA. It should be about half an hour from Portland.

The function at Lamiglas is not really a class but a weekend where rod builders from all over get together. There is not much hands but there is always lots of good seminars with real life visuals. This year it is April 10 and 11 with most of the seminars on Sat. the 11th. This is open to anyone and free. You can learn a lot about rod building in general and you will also be able to learn some things that you would not think you could do in a million years.
Hope to see you there.

George,
If your looking to get into rod building you can come over and see my set up. I've built all of my own rod building gear and I bet I don't have $30 into it including the dryer. The equipment part can be done on the cheap so you can spend more on blanks and components. :D
And your right, it's pretty cool to catch a fish on a rod you built with your own hands.
