I've got a Sager 8550 laptop that I think has a bad hard drive. I'm looking for something inexpensive (or free?) that is known to be in good working condition. My laptop will freeze up at different times. Sometimes it boots, sometimes not. I've replaced the heat sink fan and thermal paste. Now I'm thinking it's the drive. So if anyone has a cheap or free drive they know works, I would love to take it off your hands. Or if you've got any ideas on what else may be wrong, feel free to chime in.
Thanks,

Check out Fryes in Wilsonville. They have some great sales and each Friday is the time to go. You can find a great Hard Drive for real cheap.

i tend to question whether it is the hard drive if you are booting randomly. you might look into flashing the bios to make sure its up to date and current. it sounds more like a software issue to me for some reason. there is some diagnostic software out there for sale....dont remember the name off hand but you could google it im sure. it will tell you everything you want to know and then some from software to hardware to clock speed etc.
hope this helps

I don't think it's the software. It will boot and work perfectly for up to 40 minutes, sometimes only 8. Other times it just makes a few noises and won't show anything at all. Just a black screen. So I'm still looking for a hard drive, or any other suggestions. I didn't really want to put much more money into this. It's an older PIII MMX and not worth a whole lot these days. It would just be nice to plink around with it.
Thanks

Just go to Ace Computer Repair in West Linn
503) 657-1842 Their work on my computer was great; and they charged me $20;;;Yeah $20 I couldn't believe it. They know their stuff and back it up with future assistance if needed.

if the mother board is outdated it will do just what you are describing. if you google "how to flash a mother board" you should try that before spending too much money.
