I use a Garmin GPSmap 76s. It connects to my fishfinder via nema wiring. This allows my ff to display speed and other useful info at a glance without having to pick the unit up to look at it. The "S" stands for sensor which is actually an electronic compass which could be useful in the event the gps incurrs problems in low visibility conditions. My only regret is in not getting the color unit. Color is so much easier to see than trying to decipher minor grayscale patterns.

If you go with a Garmin then I suggest the US TOPO software. It will give depth readings on most bays and the Columbia River up to Longview. Before getting the lake map software check to see if it covers all the lakes you are interested in. Many Oregon and Washington lakes are not covered.

I also use the Garmin GPSMap76CS, and with the swivel base mount I have it on the dash of my boat and it's easily seen.
the lakes program has a lot of lakes, but is missing a lot that I would like too. and not that many in my area that show bottom contour.

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend and love it. The topo maps are great for hiking and include most water ways even some alpine lakes. You really cant go wrong with a Garmin product.

I also have a Garmin Hand Held, great little unit, I will probably go with a Lowrance unit for my new boat (not Portable) because I think that I was seeing more of the lakes that I fish covered in the software for their units. If I were to get another portable it would be a Garmin.

I just bought a Garmin 60CSX...all I can say is it is amazing.

it takes a couple of hundred $'s in software to make it run to its potential.

One other note on the 76 series... they are water proof AND float. A pretty nice feature to have when around water.
