Hey guys, heading out this spring to do some small creek steel prospecting. I would like to tie up a new rod between now and then and am wondering if anyone here has a lead for the blank. What I would like is a fast action 8 foot #8 fly blank. Is there such a thing, and if so who makes them?? Thanks -FF

Patricks Fly Shop in Seattle has "deals" on Sage & other discontinued blanks & cosmetic blems, try them.

Thanks for the ideas guys, but still no findo. Maybe I can cut a 8'6" down to fit my liking? Might take too much of the backbone out though. Anybody ever tried this? -JG

Shouldn't be too hard to find. Check out cabela's. Go to their website and type in "rodbuilding", you'll find lots of everything, including blanks of every type and priced very reasonably. Cabela's re-brands a lot of big-name blanks for far less than they would otherwise go for.

If 8 ft 3 inches is close enough look at the Rainshadow IST993. Fastest actioned steelhead blank I'm aware of in this power range. Sage also has some new bass fly rod blanks, but expect the normal sticker shock.

some manufacturers will void the warranty if you shorten their blanks, i know lamiglas doesn't though(and even encourages it). remember, if you cut equal portions off a 2-piece, 8'6" rod, you're only losing 3" off the tip and 3" off the butt, probably not enough to make a huge difference in performance.

Good idea here! Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions! -FF

So, I think I found a suitable blank, anybody know the correct procedure for cutting length from a graphite blank?? -Jon

I'm not a big fan of trimming blanks, except in cases of some of the heavier saltwater/surf blanks. Trimming the light weight blanks we're talking about dramatically changes things in a hurry in my experience. Removing tip length slows the action of a blank, removing from the butt takes away a blanks power. If you want to see how much it can make a difference take a rod you have at the house that has similar power to what your looking for and hang 50 cents worth of pennies off the tip while holding the rod horizontal, now hang the same pennies one guide back and compare again.
Now if you still want to do it, just take an abrasive cut off wheel and you dremel tool and go to it, I use a bit of tape to give me a straight edge to cut to, you can finish with a light sanding with a block of sandpaper.

I use a triangle shaped metal file with fine teeth. Rotate the blank and use the file to slowly score the blank, continue on that line till you cut all the way through. Watch out that you do not unnecessarily heat the blank in that one location while cutting.
I don't like cutting blanks either unless I'm making cork reamers

Thanks guys, I appreciate your candor and have decided against this little operation. Doesnt seem like it would make much sense just for three inches. -FF
