We are trying to unlock the Kokanee puzzle. We had some "lips" on a couple spinners we pulled in this weekend at Green Peter. Do most of you use snubbers ahead of your rig. We haven't struck gold but we are on the trail.
Thanks

Snubbers no, Kokanee Rods Yes and don't horse them if they fight Thumb them and let them go or hold the tip down and keep them in the water.

Alot of people seem to have their own opinion about snubbers, but personally I don't leave home without them. I feel that it does help my land ratio. Perhaps a true kokanee rod will eliminate the need for them. I fish a daiwa spinamatic that I really like the action on off the downrigger and I also have an okuma celieo kokanee special that is a little stiffer that is ok. I'm thinking about picking up either a vance or shasta rod and seeing if they are better without the snubbers. Also a reel with a really smooth drag definitely helps. Part of the fun with kokanee is experimenting. I love buying and trying out new gear... :D

If you are using flashers in-line, then use of a snubber will help greatly. If you are not using flashers in-line, try two hooks and bigger ones (size 4 or 2). Koknaee's mouths this time of year are very soft.
I have been fishing the spinmatics UL rods for years and don't find the need for a snubber when using small dodgers. I don't know if you will find a rod that is that much better. Well, maybe a Lamiglas AC73UL Rock Creek Series rod. :D

For a kokanee rod, check out a shimano talora 7'0" ul at Joe's. At $69.99 you really can't find a nicer rod for kokanee, IMHO.

If you can make it to Sisters for an evening class April 10 and 17 for the COCC Kokanee class (or come to half) there will be several very knowledgable iFishers to chat with and a bunch of good gear on display that might save you a lot of time figuring things out. If you can take Friday off you can fish Suttle on the way home (non-mandatory lab class:D)

Great, another rod that I am going to have to check out to feed my addiction. :meme:

There have been several threads on this topic. If you do a search on kokanee rods or reels you will find lots of informations. Personally, I use a BassPro Shops Pro Qualifier bait casting reel, which I think is really a Pflueger Trion.

The only time I've ever seen "lips" is when guys set the hook. Let em take and reel them in. A friend of mine on the first take down of the day a while back set the hook like he was bass fishing... poor fish.

Thanks for the help. The kokanee killer was pulling right through their mouth on the downrigger. I was using light grabbers on the riggers. I will be at Joes picking up some new gear. I agree that buying new gear is half the fun. I am also going after a new fishfinder. We will figure these fish out. See you at the lake. By the way where do you get the Ifish stickers?

Try a 000 Dodger followed by either a green wedding ring tipped with white corn or lately have had great luck using green or pink hoochies. Pull up Shasta Tackel company on the web and you will see some great gear.

This early in the year they will have softer lips, Stay w/ rubber snubbers and don't try to pull them and yank them in,, They love to fight and people try to fish them like 12-15lb salmon.

This is great advice for Green Peter. I would add: retying with #4 red Gamakatsu hooks (drop shot hooks are best but I can only find them online). I would also add a trailer hook tied 1/2 inch behind the first.
Good luck!

The slip was good. Actually the water was halfway up the lowest parking lanes, so it came up 10' plus last week. I just got a report that the road to the ramp at Detroit is passable so we are headed that direction this weekend. My boat is a 19 foot Northwest Jet with a beavers sticker on the windshield. I am installing my new Lowrance 525c tonight and should be ready to roll.
