I caught a chum salmon at stony point Sunday on the Alsea river. Has anyone else caught Chum on the Alsea?

PS I caught it on a bobber and pink and white jig.

That's a first. I have never heard of a chum salmon caught on the Alsea. Don't tell me this is another Alsea strain hatchery fish.
That's very strange indeed. I'm assuming you let the fish go. Was the fish in decent shape?

Were you fishing for salmon with steelhead gear? I think I might be missing something here, unless the Alsea steelies decided to come in a month early

I was fishing for Steelhead, it isn't that early (month). Remember Mikie from early last season? He wasne't the only one catching fish on bobber and jigs early in the eason.

Those aren't stays, they are remnant runs from what once was. At one time there were many rivers that got some chums in them.

My grandpa had a place on Sand Lake near Pacific City and remembers there being tons of chum in there spawning in the tidewater around the little creeks that empty in.

My dad caught one on the Salmon river in Lincoln City last week. (~8lbs, released) Strays from the Kilches, Miami, or Wilson???? Strange indeed.

There are chums in about every river system up and down the coast. There is not alot of them though. I spoke with a Bioligist about them earlier this fall. I was mildly surprised by what he had to say about them.
And yes there are some steelhead in the Alsea. I actually saw one today. As he chased my bait as I was reelng in.

The fish was a bit on the dark side but not too bad. Yes I did release him, but he put up a hell of a fight on my steelhead gear.
