View Full Version : It happened again at the Sportsmen show

It happened the last time I went to the Sportsmen show, and it happened again. I found a new Kokanee rod that I could not live without. You know, you stop by a few booths just looking around. You pick up a few rods, feel their balance and give them a wiggle to check out their action. Then it happens. Standing all by itself in the Lamiglas rack is an ultralite casting rod with a look that tells you it is a Kokanee rod. You tell yourself not to touch it. Don’t pick it up you say in your mind. Your will is gone, none existent as your hand reaches to pick-up the rod out of the rack. As you wiggle the rod you notice that it has a different feel from your 5 other Kokanee rods. There is a little more sensitivity to the tip. There is a bend and a flex that is unlike your other rods. As you turn the rod to read the description at the base, you notice the chocolate color and matte finish. Good-looking rod you tell yourself. It is a rod you have not seen before. Written on the rod is: Rock Creek Series IM7 AC73UL. Below this reads: By Lamiglas 7’3” 1/8-1/2 oz, 2-8 lb, Line. Seven foot 3 inches, perfect. You count the ferrules, 10, perfect. Almost all hope of walking away empty handed is gone. You wiggle the rod again to study the action again. Absolutely, it has a different action from your other rods. You begin to wonder how it will load-up in the downrigger, how it will feel with a Kokanee splashing around on the other end, how much you will enjoy this rod.

As you leave the booth with rod in hand, you realize you did not really need another Kokanee downrigger rod. But this is insurance incase one breaks. You know that a rod or two will not get used this year. But those that will gather dust don’t really have the action you want. You know that the ones being used right now work fine and fish are not really lost due to the inadequacies of them. But, this could be the perfect Kokanee rod and there is only one way to find out. Yep, field tests. That’s it; you bought this rod so you can share with others the news of maybe, just maybe, a perfect Kokanee downrigger rod.

You poor soul. Which booth should I be "steering clear" of??

Well, if I had not got the last one, you would have wanted to stay clear of Ollie Damon's booth. They have other "Kokanee" rods at their booth, but they seem too stiff for my liking. The BeauMac booth had some Lami Kokanee rods but don't know if they had that one. I searched the net looking for a place to buy them, and it seems they are being offered only thru small retailers and will not be at Joe's or Sportsmans.

Only one! I found a Lamiglass 7 foot rod last year, MBC 702UL Kokanee Special had to have 1 for her and now have four of them Might be the one you said is to stiff but I like them, work very well for trout with spoons and in the downriggers. now I have several old favorite's collecting dust.

I'd say it might be time for a rod intervention, but I don't know anyone on this board that could be qualified as a "clean". I know that I don't qualify since you scooped the last one before I could buy it!!!

I noticed that FRG went to our first day of lifejacket handout volunteering without any cash. He came back the second day loaded for bear. While I was busy oogling boats that I can't afford he was taking care of business. Teach me to dilly dally!!

I just must not be dialed in for the sportsmans show. I have been two years in a row and the only thing I've bought was a Steiner print.

I dunno if I just go through too quick or what, but I can never find stuff to buy. I keep hearing reports of tackle or rods or cheap weights and I didn't see any tackle, anywhere for sale.

I found one of the rod manufacturer's booths but I figured the rods were display models as they didn't have prices.

I reckon I'm the only person who goes to that show wanting to spend money but can't find anything for sale.

Boats, tho- now I could've bought a boat or three.

regards, aw

I didn't find a rod to buy but Englund's Marine supply was right next to the PFD give away so I went over to check out what they had to offer after my shift was over. While looking at the Mustang display I made the mistake of saying that I wanted to add two more Hydrostatic vests to my boat sometime this year. They said for two they would make me a deal I couldn't refuse and I didn't. It would of been cheaper to buy a fishing rod.

I was at the show late today and pick up one of thoes Kokanee rods and made a great deal $59.99. I had to talk my wife into it she said yes, She got hers last week a shimino Koknee rod. I hope I can out fish her. If not I will have to leive the hook off her lure.

Man I thought I was pretty much set for kokanee this season as far as rods go, but now FRG has me searching the net as to where I can pick up one of those lamis...

I found out that Allsports distributes these rods. They can be special ordered through BiMart. Or, if you are in Central Oregon, Cent Wise can order them as well.

hey now! you took one for the team! Now we all have an legitimate excuse to get our new, perhaps perfect, koke rod for the new season.

thank you brave soul.

My wife gave up years ago, and now buys rod holders for me so I can atleast keep them orderly. Not that I actually use them. The corners of a couple rooms seem to work fine.

Thanks for the info FRG. I was thinking of asking the Lami rep at the Fisherman's show, but my local bi-mart will work! :D
