CATCH AND EAT

Took my dad up to Hoodsport on Saturday to participate in the Zoo fishery here. Tide was extremely low to begin with and the fish were way out. Should have taken the boat  Oh well. When the fish came in with the tide we really banged them. Big problem were a few Doughballs that tried to cast over mine and dad's shoulders. We put a stop to that right away by drawing attention to them. They move on to do it to someone else.

The nets last week seemed to have taken the fish off the bite during the low tide. The natives Threw all the bucks back into the water. The hens were striped of the eggs and tossed into the water. Could hardly wade out without stepping on them. Way to go Tribes. What a waste. When will we learn and stop this practice and waste?

We finished the day by 4pm with a catch of around 50 fish or so each. Arms are tired but satisfied. Oh, in case you were wondering, no I, "CATCH AND EAT" did not retain ANY fish. This is one of the many fish that I just like to catch and release. Great fun but would be better from a boat.

Was going to go to the Klikkat but the wind was blowing to hard. Hoodsport was the second choice. No wind, beautiful day, cold water, frozen toes and a slow leak in the waders. If you get a chance in the next two weeks it is a blast. Also the other rivers in the area are doing well. Especially the Kennedy.

Good luck to all this weeks fishing endevers.

I had a family event in Shelton on Saturday, Drove up to Hoodsport to see the zoo I'd heard so much about.

Pulled over on a wide spot and watched a tribal member pulling his net in. He was tossing all of his fish in the boat. He was keeping hens and bucks.

I've got a feeling that there's probly a few bad apples giving the entire tribe a bad name.

Couldn't believe the amount of nets in the water though.
Who on earth would want to take one of those ugly things home to eat??

Werner, it is less crowded if you are in a boat or float tube. Just be sure to anchor out of the casting range of the crowd. When the tide is out the boats do very well. When the tide comes in it is the bankies turn.

As far as gear your standard steelhead gear will do. A minimum of twelve pound test and twenty # leader. Those fish have teeth! The limit is 4 per day although these fish are not table fair as far as I am concerned. Smoked I am told works well but there are other fish in the sea.

Set up is simple. A barrel swivel between main and leader. Pencil lead near tag on swivel. Chartruse Corkie with Chartruse yarn. Don't be afraid to mix in pink, green, orange corkies.

Good luck!
