Hey all I just had a few questions for you, im thinking of going and doing some jetty fishing and I live in astoria, should I just go to the south jetty or would it be better to take a drive down to tillamook? Also what bait would I use and what time is best as far as tides go? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey, it all depends, if the weather stays lousy like it is now, stay home and wait it out, otherwise I have caught more and bigger fish off the South Jetty of the Columbia, one heck of a hike out to the upwelling,( the left hand turn in the jetty) forget the shrimp, cut bait like anchovie and 2/0 hooks or clam necks. Sinker at the bottom up 2' to a 3way swivel. Or a 1.5 silver Krockadille (sp) 15 to 20# test on river rod should do it,,, lastly in my arsenal is a 1/2 to 3/4 oz. round head jig with a curly tail jig head 3" to 5" bounced around the big rocks...not a good time to go at night... 1 hour before to 1/2 hour after high tide.... Good luck Steve

Verysweepy, good advice from Steve above. Let me add, stay alert on the Jetty for big waves, 'tis the season for rogue waves from offshore storms. Some are 3x normal size.
The other thing is color. Use glow in the dark or metal flake light green. This will outfish all other color jigs. BTW low slack tide works too. From an hour before to an hour after. When the current stops the bite will kick in.
Personally, I prefer Tillamook in Feb. or March when the spawners come in to close shore rocks.
Good luck
