View Full Version : Bobber and Jig rod questions, until you throw up

I know that there are a couple of lengthy threads on bobber and jig rods already,...but
I like to build my own rods. Once you know the basics, it's pretty easy. You save a little money over an equivalent rod off the shelf, and there is the satisfaction of catching fish on a rod you put together.
Anyway, I would like to build myself one of those 10 foot plus rods one of these days.
I usually end up going up to the lamiglas factory in woodland, wa to get a blank (hopefully a blem) and then, angler's workshop next door to get my parts and pieces.
I don't see a rod blank in their catologue that is specifically for this kind of fishing. Am I missing something?
Anyway, if you were going to build one of these rods, which blank would you use?
By the way, as you can see, I am a new poster to this board, though I have been reading it for some time now.
Thanks to all, and Jennie the host, for all the informative and enjoyable discussions.
Welcome peeps
Try contacting TH custom rods, I have been looking at their website recently and have asked the same question on the fishing sites you have regarding a specific rod. I am seriously considering having a rod built by them based on what I have read. They seem well connected to manufactures of rod blanks and maybe they could assist you in your search.
Good Luck!

Peeps,
Lamiglass has some great blanks for jig fishing. Check out this rod specifications copied from their web site.
GSH1262M 10'6" 2 .510 6.5 3.75 8-12 3/8-3/4 120.00
Check out Lamiglass (http://www.lamiglas.com/home.htm) , I'm sure you'll find some blanks that'll work for you.
FM2's recommendation on a TH rod is good too. From your post, crafting your own rod sounds more to your liking.
Best of luck,
Gregg

Thanks fellas.
I really do want to build it myself, so I will probably go with the lamiglas. I built myself an 8 1/2' drift rod a few years ago with a lamiglas blank (can't remember the model)that I just love to use. It casts so sweet, and has held up well under a lot of abuse.
This b and j rod will replace my old fiberglas lami spinning rod I built when I first started steelhead fishing. It's the one I use now for low water fishing, but it doesn't work so good on bobber fishing.
Christmas will be my excuse for investing in this rod.
Thanks again for the help
Hey PEEPS... we sell blanks and rod kits as well.. I would recommend a Rainshadow blank.. you can canbuy the entire kit from us for around $100, depending on the size of the rod.
We sell nothing but the best guides/croks/reel seats...
I can also save you money on other blanks (Loomis, Lamiglas, Sage IM6 etc) ... but they wont be as nice as the Rainshadow.

TH, I know you're keen on Rainshadow blanks but that's the strongest endorsement I've yet read from you. For those of us who don't sleep with modulus counts dancing in front of our eyes, could you take a standard length/ action blank (one made by Lami, Loomis, Rainshadow) and summarize how they stack up (e.g. fiber count, weight, price, your overall impression). I'm trying to get a feel for Rainshadow vs. Loomis. With a Rainshadow am I getting 75% of the rod for 75% of the price or 90% of the rod for 60% of the Loomis price?
PS What exactly is the "finest croks". I have some better-than-average (saltwater) crocs I can supply you with but I'm not certain that your rod buyers would appreciate getting a baby saltie in the the tube with their new Rainshadow!
OK Snagly -- sorry for the type-o .. I bet you see lots of nice "croks" down-under )Hey check out the new TH Rods in Action page on our web page, your pretty mug is up)
Lets compare tip size, blank weight, butt dia with the GL3 Loomis 1025 and the Rainshadow.
All of this information is published info and I am not a scientist (just a middle school VP, and rod builder)
Loomis Rainshadow
Tip 5.0 tip 5.0
butt dia. .489 butt .490
blank weight 2.75 blank weight 2.77
Retails $275 $160
Same warranty
these rods are pretty darn close.. I would say you get the same rod (unless you can detect .02 oz)
I have done the blind test many times.. GL3 1025 in one hand (same components) Rainshadow in the other close your eyes, can't tell them apart...
As for modulus.. the Rainshadow is 43 million.. the IMX is 57 million I believe and the GL3 is 37 million..

Thanks TH -- finally found your reply buried on page 2. My next rod is going to be a Rainshadow.
