I was assigned to come up with some strategies to improve the cover in a small private pond that is filled with warm water species (Largemouth Bass, Black Crappie, and Bluegill). This is my first attempt to provide cover for small & large fish. My next step is going to provide small gravel 3/4-1 1/2 round rock in certain areas of the pond. Small trees will be slid into the pond and weighted down at the end to sink it. I'm excited the predator fish are about 14"-16" long already. A friend of mine is going to help me film the bass underwater to try capture what takes place underwater while feeding these fish at this pond. No one has fished for these fish yet. It’s going to be interesting to see how the fish respond to certain lures and live bait. Any ideas from you professional bass fisherman and fellow I-fisher would be appreciated greatly. I have about three larger ponds to duplicate this process to. Thanks once again:D

You have a good start! remember small brush will be gone in about two years. You may like to add some bigger branches near the brush piles. Is the pond water level ever lowered enough to walk out and set good sized rock piles with logs trapped in the good sized rocks. If you would like to see some thing like this you can go to Mayor park near Rowena in the Columbia gorge (near hood river). I have pulled a near 6 lbs bass off that cover there and bass over 6 pounds on brush piles I planted the previous week. You are on your way! Do the bass have food to eat in the pond? bring in some perch from Hagg. and even some crawdads would help.

I had some concrete removed from my property a year or so ago and the company I used haul the broken up chucks to a private pond and made rock piles for cover.

I thought it was a good use of the concrete.

Good luck with the pond.

Too bad there isn't a way to make the brush piles snag free. I know the construction bricks will keep them down but if anyone every used braided line, could that pull the bricks up? Just wondering.

I put Doug Fir slash in my pond fer some cover. It sank no problema. I also put in shale & river rock in different areas. A few native water weeds grow on their own in the water. I put in some Water Lilies (Beautiful flowers)................I brought home 1 Cattail i thought was dead.................They have really spread in 4 years. The fish like it....................:D

Best of Luck with your projects..........

You could use old christmas trees weighted down with cinder blocks to provide cover. I have seen that has work for in the past.
