Greetings to all you Jig Experts. Like many others, I have begun fishing bobber and jig for low water steelhead. My biggest concern, however, is the quality of hook. I seem to loose alot more fish with jigs than when drift fishing.
My question: Do any jig makers use quality hooks, like Mustad Ultra, Owner or Gamu? These hooks have improved my drift fishing success by 50%. I would like to find jigs with hooks of the same quality for the winter steelhead season. Thanks, Drifter.

You can always tie your own, they're a piece of cake, and about 1/4 the price.
Double check your materials. Flourecent colors will stay more true in most water conditions.
If you want to scent your jig, tie them with yarn instead of marabou.
If your going to buy 'em...
I'd pick bou-mac's 10 to 1 over Bradbury's

You're right to be concerned about the quality of hooks for jigs because they will definetly be put to the test with steelhead and salmon. Over the years I've used a lot of different jigs with various hooks and have found one hook that has surpassed all my expectations. That hook is Owner. I love Gamakatsu jig hooks too but now I tie all my personal jigs with Owner hooks. They are that good.

I, too, have had major problems with light wire hooks on steelhead jigs. Mike Floyd of Rainbow jigs (www.rainbowjigs.com) has tied plenty of jigs for me using extra strong hooks. On request he can do the same for you.
If you use plastic worms on jig heads, Offshore Angler (saltwater Bass Pro offshoot) sells the best value for money bare jigheads with strong hooks:
Red round jigs: 1/4 oz 22778907 @ $2.39 / 10
Hope this helps.
Mark at First Cast has the best hooks available (owner). He sent me a jig and bobber and I am impressed with his product. Give them a try, I don't think you will be disappointed.
