There is an water impoundment in central oregon named after a butch of hay piled up. When's time for kokanee there and any reports??

do you mean the one just north of the gorge, between the two highways?

Haystack Reservoir was frozen over last week although not enough to ice fish. I have heard that there are some kokes in it but I have not seen any caught. I have caught 'bows, browns, bass, catfish, and bluegill out of it. My favorite being hold over Brooders ('bows) in the 5-10 pound range. I will probably start trying them out in the next couple weeks. I am also not exactly sure when they will be putting the dock back in at the boat launch. If you are looking for kokes you would be better off going another couple miles north west and dropping in to Lake Billy Chinook. Most current reports for that body of water is pertaining to Bull trout however.

I have read of reports of Kokanee being in Haystack, but in two tries I have not be successful. Billy Chinook, like the doc said, would be a better bet.

I have a friend who now lives in Madras who could not catch a bull in LBC to save his life and would get irritated with me when I kept showing him my pictures, but he has Haystack dialed in for kokes. He says he limits almost every time out. Are you listening Brian?
Myself, I have never figured anything out in that lake.

Yes, you have my attention. There is always something new to learn about Kokanee fishing. I did not mark very many fish so there must be some secret.

Got my attention also Fish-On-Bend. Like I said, I have caught plenty of everything except Kokes out of there. I have not even seen a person pull in a koke, let alone caught one myself, and I have drug a few koke rigs around the little lake and only caught bass on them....but I suppose I have not given it a really fair shake, when the other rods are loading up with 10 # rainbows, it is hard to tinker with colors and scents on a koke rod.

I swung by the other day and the southern portion of the lake was about half iced off. There was open water and you could get a boat in. Probably be better after the warm weather this week.

Of course I didn't have a rod with me so all I could do was look...

I took my step daughter out there 2 weeks ago. It was 99% iced over but a small section by the fishing pier. We saw several nice fish rise but we couldn't get them to take anything i was offering. It was a fun trip. We plan on going back next week. With this nice weather i might be able to get my boat out and do some trolling.

Aren't Brown trout their too? Any size to them? I've heard of decent rainbows like stated up above.

If you haven't caught a koke yet, have you tried a DuPont Spinner?

Since I have not been able to catch a Kokanee out of Haystack, of course I had to assume there were no Kokanee in that body of water. I just got off the phone with Ted Wise at ODFW. He said 40,000 Kokanee are planted each year at 60/lb. That is 20,000 more than Paulina. But, there is no way to keep the fish in the reservoir and many go out the canal. It looks like I'll have to give it another try.

On a side note, Ted also shared that the first spring chinook fingerlings were planted in the Metolius a few days ago.

40,000!!! holy something pc. There are Browns, presumably canal transplants. I have seen and caught 18-20" browns but have not heard of any really sizable ones. No I have not tried a dupont spinner, like I mentioned earlier, it is hard to keep trying koke set-ups when there are 10# 'bows on the other rods.
