So I am building a rod for my senior project, i'm using american tackle guides but i'm having trouble wrapping one of the sides of the guide... there is an indent, its not the side shown in this pic, but the opposite, right as i get close to finishing the wrap, there is an indent before the guidewire starts to go towards the ring, so the wraps get messed up and leave a gap... any tips? Do i file down the sides? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

At the third wrap after the reduction pack the thread using an edge of your burnishing tool (a small cocktail straw will work just cut it 45 degrees). If you do just one wrap it won't stay. Increasing you thread tension a little helps also.
Anyone else have another trick?

I start below the foot and wrap up towards the guide. It is easier to go uphill than downhill.

I am going up the guide... wasn't aware there was any other way to do it? But the thread keeps slipping off just at the indent which causes a small gap to occur... maybe filing down the edges of the guide foot would help? Any ideas on that? Thanks

I'm assuming you are talking about the area of the guide foot where the transition from the foot to the support
begins, as pointed out in the picture?
Some guides do have a dramatic size difference in that area and can cause the problem you describe. The picture is of a FUJI guide and as you can see the transition is smooth and does not have the "wings" at that area, as some guides do.
If you can file or grind that area, to make a smoother transition, it will help make your thread wraps follow evenly.

Be sure to keep StickFish's advice in mind as well. Keep the threads packed tight & burnish.

File the ends of the guides down to an edge. Be careful not to leave any sharp edges as this will cut your wrapping thread. Start from the outside and wrap up onto the guide foot. Good luck with your project. Wish I could have had the chance to do that when I was a Senior. You are on the right foot also. You know where to look to get the best information for your project. you should be stopping at that point. you need to leave the rest unwrapped . this is to let the guide flex when the rod bends. also try not to get finish way up the feet as it will crack and allow water to get in and rust it.
