Since there seems to be a lot of cold water bass fishing going on right now so I was wondering what is everyones go to lures for largemouths/smallmouths when the water temps are low? For largemouth I usually go to a jig and plastic trailer. Don't really have a go to for smallmouth cuz I dont fish them much.

Water temp 47-50 its cranks small worms on split shot or drop shot
50-53 shallow plastics depending on weather
53-56 spinnerbaits and cranks shallow
57-60 whatever you want to use..

For early season largies, I used to use hard minnow immitations, like Rebels or Rapalas when the fish are in the shallows seeking warm water on sunny days. For smallies, I won't fish them for a month or two, but Prespawn I like digging a crank bait into the rocks and mud. I also use a texas rigged creature bait and a dropper/ drop shot curly tail robo worm about 1.5' off the bottom, so the T Rigged creature is my weight for the drop shot. Flyfishing we do the same thing with a heavy stonefly nymph at the terminal end and a hare's ear dropper.

I'm a river smallie fisherman myself, and I primarily use suspending jerkbaits, lipless cranks, tubes and finesse worms this time of year. I like to "slow roll" a rattlin' rap just like a spinnerbait and the tube or trick worm makes a good follow up bait for missed and/or neutral fish. IMO the pigs aren't as affected by the cold temps.........thats why I fish an action lure followed by a deadsticked plastic.

I don't think I have a favorite early season lure. Until the water heats up a bit I basically rig up four rods, start at one end of the tackle box and work my way to the other. Whichever thing catches fish is definitely my favorite!

A weightless superfluke or other plastic jerkbait or stickbait fished very slowly on warm days works on largemouth. Try to sit for 30 seconds to a minute by logs and other heat absorbing structures that bass hangout by.

black and blue 3/8oz jig for most largemouth applications until water hits 51-52 then I go to a helicoptering 1/4oz spinnerbait with a chunk trailer. Those are my bread and butter until 55 degrees then it's all out whatever I want to throw.
