I'd like to tie up some kokanee rigs with hootchies and wedding rings for this spring and summer. Any recommendations from you kokanee experts on what size and type of hook to use? Thanks.

I've been using #4 octopus Gami's and had pretty good success. I always tie up a double hook set up. There are other types of hook shapes that i want to experiment with, but have a hard time finding them. I know lots of people also use #2's especially on hoochies. Whatever you use, make sure they are sharp!

#4 are what I use and always tie them like a mooching rig.

Another vote for # 2s. Tie my leaders with double #2s gami drop shot hhoks or a #2 followed by a #4. As mentioned tie as a salmon mooching leader with the hooks a inch of so apart.

System (above hooks, soft rod and direct drive reel) works well for me with good hooked to landed ratio.

Thanks a lot guys. I've got some red 2's and 4's around so I better get busy and tie up some. Another thing I've wondered about. I've always used wedding rings with the stock "stacked" bead setup, but a buddy of mine says he purchases beads of the same size range and replaces the stacked with the loose individual beads to get better action on the lure. Any thoughts on this idea?

Individual beads give the best action. And the most flexibility of color and types.

I do not argue that individual beads have better action than stacked beads, but I don’t know by how much they will out fish sacked beads. By the time the fish sees your dodger, moves in for a closer look and sees your lure, I believe color, size of spinner, size of spinner blade(vibration), speed, corn scent, and leader length play a much grater roll in getting a fish to strike then whether or not your beads are individual or stacked.:twocents:

That being said, I do have about 40 spinners that are individual beads, and 30 or more that are stacked beads that I will try to determine if there is any advantages to either setup this year.

Good luck ET:flowered:

There was a real good article about building kokanee rigs in STS quite a while ago. They used # 2,4 & 6 kahl style hooks. I used them last year and they worked good...not sure they were any better than the standard octopus style hook, but they weren't any worse, plus they look kind of cool!

I read that same article and can't seem to find where to buy those hooks. I've also been looking for "drop shot" style hooks that I can only seem to find online. Anyone know of any local sources for either style of hook?

That same article mentions using separate beads for better action and also the individual beads will "chatter." That being said I have some stacked beads from store bought lures that I retied with a double hook rig that also caught fish, but I feel more confident in the individual beads. I'll try to experiment more this year too.

Fishermans carries both the Khali (Eagle Claw) and the drop-shot (Gamakatsu) hooks. The Khali is a heavier wire and the drop-shot is a fine wire hook. When looking for the drop-shots it is called a split-shot/drop-shot on the packaging. I overlooked them multiple times because of this. Now if they would just start stocking them in red.

I have been running double 4's in the octopus and single 2 in the drop-shot.

Thanks Splash. I must have overlooked them as well. Time for a trip down to fisherman's since my spinner blade order should be here any day now...:D
