Iwas just curious if any of you guys target the lunker , say 10 pounds or bigger trout any where, or is it just north Idaho that grows em. Not talkin trash just curious about lure selection and trolling speeds. We target big bows and lakers with either big trolling flies or mondo plugs.

I know Paulina lake's record is a 28lb brown is that big enough for you.. Alot of lakes in Oregon have big trout in them... East, Paulina, Crane, Whickiup, Cresent, Odell, Mann and a bunch of others that i know others will list.

There are some very skilled big trout fishermen who post on this forum (fish-on-bend and others) who regularly target and catch the bigguns'. We've got some great fishing for lunker trout here in Oregon and here are some of the state records with warm water fish included:

Stillwater: nice freakin' fish!!! I like the look on your face. I never have done all that well there...of course, I don't fish stillwaters nearly enough (hopefully that'll change this coming year with my new float tube)...

Since I only fish rivers, I can only answer with regards to that...yes, there are certain spots you can find monster trout...not telling where, you've gotta pay your dues and be willing to accept a day or two without a fish. We're not talking stockers either...think big browns, that should narrow it down a bit.

That's a pig rainbow, Stillwater.

I'll raise you a 10 pound brown and 2 porky macks. All from the shallows of Crescent last fall.

Yes Oregon has some big lakers.http://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/medium/DCP_0013.JPG (http://www.ifish.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/41655/size/big/cat//ppuser/8168)

We also have a bull trout or 2 in what is one of the few lakes where you can legally target them.http://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/medium/DCP_00091.JPG (http://www.ifish.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/41656/size/big/cat//ppuser/8168)

bowing to the masters... dear lord those are some nice macks... Actually they are freakin PIGS! I've hooked six on flies since 2003, but none as nice as those.

I'm hitting LBC next week with a friend to patrol the shallows with flies. maybe Mr. bull trout will say hello.

I like bass on flies too.

Alright Dan and Joe, I'll show my hand in this "poker" game. I've got a 12-1/2 lb brown over an 11 lb bull. Just don't ask to see my laker photos because, well, I don't really have any to put up against yours.

My advice, use big plugs (i.e. 4-1/2 to 5-1/2"). As for speed, not trying to sound vague, but it really all depends. I don't know if I can speak for all the trophy trout fishermen out there, but I am constantly mixing my speeds. Sometimes I'll troll around 1.6 mph for a few minutes, then maybe I'll bump it up to 2.0 mph for a while. And if I'm really bored and desperate, sometimes I'll go even higher. Sorry for answering your question without really answering your question.

Sarmstrong, are you following these posts? Lunker trout fishing is alive and well in Central Oregon. I used to do fish taxidermy as a side business. I mounted browns of 14lbs, 16lbs, 17 1/2 lbs 25 lbs and 26 1/2 lbs as well as a couple dozen in the 5-12 lb size. Lakers up to 28 lbs. Bulls to 16 and rainbows up to 12lbs. :thisbig:
As far as plugs and tactics, well Rapalas still take more than any other plug and trolled or cast they continue to bring results.

As I looked at my photos to post. I noticed that I have been in a slump for longer that I want to admit. These photo's are a couple of years old. But are still fresh in my mind and I cant wait to get back out on the water. As for lure selection I think you cant go wrong using rapala's. I personally think we all get caught up in using custom lures. I am embarrassed to say that I have spent way to much money on custom painted lures that cost ten times as much as a rapala's. As for trolling speed I never troll over 3.5 mph and normally troll between 1.5 - 2.5 mph. Sarmstrong do you have any photo's to share?

Camel,

Nice Trout.

I hooked one like that at Davis back in the 90's that was like that. It broke off at my float tube. not quite that big, but still enough to cause me to mutter to myself for a couple of hours afterward...

We truly have some great trophy trout fishing here in Central Oregon.
