I'm in the market for a float tube. I saw the Dave Scadden at the Sportsman's Show and was impressed. He said it has some rocker to it so it's more stable in the water.

How does the Scadden compare to the Outcast, or others?

I'm mainly interested in something I can pack into some of the cascade lakes (1-3 miles), don a set of waders, and float around for a few hours at a whack.

After some research I purchased the top of the line Cat-3 v-hull float tube from Sportsman's Warehouse here in Salem. For $150, it had all of the same features and construction of the $300-400 models available elsewhere. I have been very happy with the purchase, and enjoy the comfort of the unit.

If you can find one, check out a Curtis Raft. I don't know that he's still making them but the total outfit weighs something like 2 lbs. and you wouldn't have to pack your waders. Post this over at the Washington Fly Fishing Forum (http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com/board/) & they'll give you some good info on them (or just do a search on the site).

If you're set on a float tube, check out the Outcast backpacking model (it is a little spendy-as in $330-though). I have the Fish Cat 4 Deluxe and can't see myself getting another float tube. It is by far the most comfortable float tube I've ever owned. Plus, you're sitting higher up so your visibility is much better than more traditional designs. It does weigh a little more than some others though. I think the backpacking model only weighs 8 lbs (compared to 14 lbs. for my Fish Cat 4). Head out to the nearest flyshop and check them out...good luck & let us know what you decide.

I have a waterskeeter pontube that I like to call the throne ... Kickin aroun with your bottom out of the water is much more comfortable in those fridgid lakes ... It comes in its own duffle with shoulder straps ...

My Wife has a Fish Cat, & I got a Cabelas similar to a Fish Cat, The Fish Cat is better, the seat on the Cabelas is a little weak & bends under my weight #200, & is less stable overall, The Fish Cat is a little heavy for Backpacking, but is more stable, & worth the extra weight.
