View Full Version : Frozen reels...
OK, I'm on a winterizing roll ... I know when I flyfish for steelhead that I get lots of ice in my guides. I usually just dip the rod in the water to melt it off. But with my drift gear it's a little different. I also get ice on the reel and I don't want to dip the reel to melt it off. I find good cleaning and oiling helps a lot, but does anyone have any other ideas for keeping a casting reel (or sturgeon reel) working properly in freezing weather?

I use chapstick on my guides if its really cold. Don't dunk your reel if it might freeze... I have used greases that got rock hard in cold weather...ruined fishing for the day. Simulate colod weather by putting the tube in the freezer to see how it firms up.
A silicone grease seems to work great for me, but I don't spend my time in Eastern Washington during the Winter.

WD-40 for the short-term. Or remington silicon gun spray works better.

I was just out casting, and I am wondering.... It makes a whirring noise. I am no fishing or tackle expert!
What do I do? Does it just need cleaning?
