Checked one out today. Is this a good model of motor, particularly for this boat? How much fuel consumption would it use typically, especially compared to a prop? Other experiences, comparisons?

I have a friend who has a very similar set up. He says it planes well and can haul as much gear and people in it as you can fit. He uses th eboat for duck hunting and an ocassional bass tournament where he can't get his 21ft Trition back to where he needs to go. Anyone else use something similar?

JMV? I don't know about that model but my buddy just picked up the Smokercraft 1660 Sportsmans sled with a 50 2 stroke Merc Jet...

After looking at the boat and everything, the bottom is more like 66 inch's wide in the back and is rated for a 75hp at the output.

He put the 50hp 2 stroke jet and we put 4 people in it and the boat planed real quick, just was no speed racer. I have a need for speed thing goin on so id put a 75-90hp at the power head to fullfill my needs.
Nice thing about that 50/35 jet is hes never gonna burn thu the gas.

I have the Sportsman 1660 too, but with a 90hp 2 stroke. It hauls ass and gets on step in a boat length. Never burned more than 8-9 gallons of gas in a long day, and I'm hardly gentle with it, i.e I like to do big powerslides, etc. Better to have too much than not enough, I think.

Any problems getting wet? Doesn't seem to have much bow flare, but with a 90 hp 2 stroke pump you should be able to move out pretty good.:meme:Speed is a GOOD thing.

I checked out the boat Jebadiah was talking about. Seems pretty clean and has less than 20 hrs on the motor. Suposedly one of the reps for G-Loomis had the hull at one time. Is $6500 a good deal for the set up? Has a new galv. trailer with oil bath hubs.

Sounds like a good deal to me. Might have a problem with the insurance company if the motors bigger than the boats rated for though. Where did you find it if you dont mind me asking?

They rate all boats hulls now days at the pump/prop. (at least thats what stevens told us)
So if you have a 90/65 on that 1660 that is rated for a 75 its ok. Unless you take your pump off and put a prop lower unit on, then you have a problem.

Buddy has the boat, not sure if he wants to sell it yet, depends if he sells his big sled.

i have a 1660 sportsman with a 40 four strke prop and it moves along great with being trimed out right. According to the speedo on my finder I will do about 38-40MPH with 2 adults and 2 kids. A 90hp Jet must fly!!!

My bro has this boat with a 60/40 2 stroke merc and I have a 17/60 roughneck with the same engine..these setups seem well matched..my roughneck will plane out at 25 mph by GPS...with 3 people...a 90 hp seems a bit much but should go like a bat out hades
