View Full Version : GP/Foster ramp report

I bolted up to GP to check ramp conditions today. The main road was plowed clean, but the road into Thistle ramp was still under 3-5 inches of dense wet snow. It looks like a lone presumably-4x4 rig cut a path and went clear down to the water earlier, but a car opted to *park* in the tracks just off the main road, so entrance by anyone else was impossible.

The two older Foster ramps are now gated off, and while the gate is open to the new ramp on the South Fork, the ramp ends are several feet above water level.

Sunnyside ramp on Foster should be open. The new Caulkins boat ramp still has some rock work to be done next week. It however is not a lowpool ramp so is not usable in the winter anyways. I hear it will open in the next couple of weeks for shore access. If you do not call the Linn County Parks Dept. office they are often unaware of boatramp issues ewspecially in the winter when places like Thistle are not checked daily by staff. I will take one for the team and call them today and see if there is any possibility of the ramp getting cleaned up a bit.

Foster Water Levels ( I think that Calkins is around the same elevation as Gedney Creek)

Green Peter Water Levels

I like the format of those sites the best

Sunnyside ramp on Foster should be open.

Thanks for the response. When I passed Sunnyside park on Tue ~5:00pm, the main gate to the whole park itself was locked, which surprised me.

Thistle ramp permitting on Sun or Mon, I hope to shake down the NR Seahawk after 2-3 months of sitting.

Foster/sunnyside was open yesterday and did provide a couple of limits for two. Powerbait or worms was our ticket yesterday.

I fish GP quite a bit, but didn't figure it really takes off until May...seems the fish I did get earlier were quite skinny and didn't appear to be eating much when I opened them up...similar experience from others???

The fish I caught there last weekend all were quite healthy and had stomachs full of green goo...

Several boats launched from Thistle today. It's still some tracks in 2-3 packed snow going in, but do-able. I arrived at 10am with friends, and though 2 boats had launched without chains, and my friend kept saying "no problem", there were some slick spots in the parking lot and on the upper ramp, so some cable chains seemed like quick cheap insurance. I didn't like the idea of the rig sliding forward on a steep slope with 4,200lbs+ behind, and the end of the upper ramp and ledge in front.

My intent was to shake down the motors after a long winter break, so no fishing report other than someone else telling me they caught 2 small chinook.

Awesome day to be on the water.

Wife and I fished GP on Monday. First boat in, (Blue NorthRiver Mariner, stainless steel BBQ on the front rail) no real trouble after we got past the 3 ft berm at the entrance. Four wheel drive, no chains. Fished most of the day, tried flashers, dodgers, 'rings of all colors. Two small chinook, (wife caught both, brass cowbells, red 'ring and worm) both taken near the dam. Great fishing day, not a great catching day. No one we talked to had any luck. Would't have missed it for anyting.

I know we passed you, and I'm guessing we chatted during pullout. My wife and friends were in the Blue NR Seahawk.

Days prior, I watched a truck spin tires while trying to get up the final stretch of ramp, and it was far *less* icy due to afternoon snow/ice melt. That upper ramp must stay shaded until 11:30am. Glad you made it.

That was us behind you. Like the look of your Seahawk. Considered it when I got the Mariner, but it would have busted the budget. The ramp was still frozen solid when we launched and was not slick. I think it got slick after the sun melted the top layer of ice. I was very careful and ready to try somewhere else if it looked bad. Hope to see you again sometime.
