I have an AWESOME idea!
How bout all of us get together and go to AK?
Come on! It would be SO fun!!!
We could all book at Kim's offer on ifish, listed on Kim's message board (http://www.ifish.net/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=000022)!
Then, we could hire Chris Sessions (http://www.ifish.net/Alaska.html) to take some of us fishing, and go clamming, and???
Wouldn't that be a blast? You could even take your whole family!!! The kids could clam and maybe play with the bears? NO!
Anyway, think about it. Is anyone interested? I am!
Let's go!

This fall marked my 25th year of heading to Alaska for at least one week. If you go, you'll never be the same again.

That's what happened to me, Thump.
I'll never be the same, and I can't wait to go again! This time with my kids!!!

Went up for my first time three weeks ago chasing steelhead on the fly - I can attest to never being the same again. Its called spoiled. I have never caught as many fish in a season as I did in three days of casting. My arms hurt for a few days when I got back - no joke.

I've never been to Alaska yet. I'd like to try fly fishing for silvers in the surf. Saw this on a show a few years back. Thought they were Bristol Bay or further north. Had to take a float plane to get to this remote beach. They were wading knee deep on an incoming tide. You could see the fish swimming, finning right in front, in fact small schools even swam between them and shore. A fly rod, chrome bright fish in crystal clear ocean water sounds like my idea of fun. I want to go!!

Can we start a "Let's send Hookset to Alaska benefit raffle" to raise the much needed funds? I'll second that idea. images/icons/cool.gif

Gregg --- There is nothing quite as much fun as catching those wild Alaska silvers in the surf. We used to do that at the mouth of the Lost River near Yakutat. I love Alaska! Between us I think that Fin and I have had more than 40 years of fun up there. Maybe the Ifishers who have spent time up there can have an Alaska clinic at the tackle swap meet.

Been out of town and just catching up with the Board. If there is a group of ifishers out there that want to plan a trip to the Lodge, just let me know, a group discount can be done for four or more. Thumper is right, once you go you will never be the same, some even end up owning a Lodge up there!!! Tight lines, Kim. images/icons/smile.gif

I just checked out Kim's rates. Tell you one thing, as a 26 year veteran of all kinds of Alaska lodges in many locations in The Great Land, I'll guarantee you that those are mighty reasonable rates. You just won't do any better, and that is even before the group discount!

Hey, that clam limit is 45 per day. Man are they good. It is mind boggeling to dig 45 clams without moving 20 feet on the beach.
This is down from 60 year before last. I asked a gammie at Clam Gulch last year why they dropped the limit. He smiled and said the truth of the matter is that few people will clean all sixty and waste them so they cut it back.....Wow, can you see dropping the nook limit at T-Bay to the number of fish you can clean before you start wasting them.. images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/shocked.gif It does have a way of changing how one thinks..Go for it!!!

To bad about the reason that they reduced the limit. 2 years ago we got our 60 and paid a lady $20.00 to clean each of the limits and seal them in zip lock bags. Yum!
Only took about an hour to get 60 large ones just down the beach from Clam Gulch Lodge.

Let's see, non-discounted rate at Clam Gulch, including meals for 7 days is $1500, estimated air fair from Portland is about $700 ... 6 new rod and reel set ups and assorted gear and new Orvis Alaska fishing clothes $1000 ... digital camera and accessories to preserve the experience $900 ... unanticipated expenses $900 for a grand total of $5000. BUTKim has spoken of a group discount and you might be able to get by without new gear and clothes or camera, so it could end up significantly less. .... and as the ads say, "the value of the experience .... PRICELESS!"

I'll add up how much it cost me. I got a great deal, though... but great deals happen!

Now I have to put my $0.02 cents worth. ALASK...A fishermen’s (person) dream come true and an adventure of a lifetime. This was my third time up there this year. I went in early July. In years past I fished with five other guys, in two rubber rafts, fishing and camping as we flowed down the Nushagak River. Now we have a base camp. We now run up and down the river in boats. We fish for Kings, Sockeye, Rainbows and Dolly-Varden. What an adventure! One year I came home with a blister on my thumb from trying to stop all the fish (or at least slow them down) that I was hooking. My first year up their I caught my biggest fish ever a 50lb Salmon. While the fish look very red/dark they are one of the best tasting fish I’ve ever tasted. I would go every year if I could afford it. And I dream of the next time I can get up there. There is nothing like it. If you have been thinking about it….. DO IT! You will never regret it.

You have to go to Alaska at least once (probably more) in your life. I was up there last summer out of Ketchikan and it spoiled me. 35+ kings and 100+ halibut commonplace. Don't even question if it is worth it. It is! And like Thumper said, those rates for the Clam Gultch Lodge are very very reasonable. Our 7 day trip rate was $2780. images/icons/shocked.gif Definately something to consider.
