I have never crabbed in newport, and will be in the area Nov.13. Low slack is at 5:00 pm, I'm not sure how much light we will have then but would like some info on a good launch (w/directions), general crabbing area ( no top secret spots! unless ya want to images/icons/grin.gif ), just the general low down i guess.
Thanks
Sean

Sean, Just hope the rains don't flood out the bay and wash the crabs back to the salt.
Best launch is at SouthBeach, travel accross the bridge from town, take the first right, road travels under the bridge, you'll see a large parking area on your left with the boat ramp and docks just past the lot. The launch is $6, can accomodate 4 vehicles. Really a very easy place to find.
For crabbing, once you reach the end of the boat basin turn right. People start placing pots on the right bank just past the boat basin entrance all the way up the bay and every place inbetween. I like to crab a little further up the bay. Travel past the large docks on the right (OSU HMSC docks) and start placing traps in 25 to 35 feet of water and further down past the 3 pole marker (dolphin). Out along the green can line the current can get strong and this area is also the main channel for boat traffic, best to stay away from the middle bay area. If the crabbing is good, you'll have lots of company.
Don't forget to enclose your fish in wire to keep the seals off. Lots of people, including myself use chicken and turkey.
best of luck,
Gregg

It looks like you'll have some pretty big tide swings then which usually aren't best for crabbing, and for keeping track of your pots.
We do good just below the bridge up against the N jetty, but not too close to the channel as the water can really rip through there.

Thanks Guys!
I think our room is actually in Depoe Bay, I have never heard of any crabbing there, would it be worth a try?

I think Hookset has you dialed in on the are, at least during the high tide swings. Keep moving your pots, I generally put all my pots out, and then during the first check, keep al the pots without keepers in the boat until I find a pot with keepers. Then I drop the rest of the pots in a cross pattern around the location of the pot that had the keepers.

Depoe bay is closed to crabbing, sorry.
If you like crabbing in Newport, try it at night. It stays lit up like a parking lot till midnight and the sealions won't bother you as much at night. BTW the area along the Embarcadero sea wall has given up some nice crabs for me on many occasions. Just stay out of the shipping channel, look for 15 ft or deeper water. You can go even shallower at night.
