FEAR NO FISH!
10-27-2001, 05:38 AM
We hit the water at 10:00 last night. Gary and his boy Al. I brought my oldest daughter Taylor(12). We had our lines in the water for approx. 5 minutes when Gary's reel started screaming. FISH ON! JUMP ONCE, FISH OFF! 40 minutes later my reel starts cooking off, FISH ON! TAYLOR! WAKE UP! Taylor runs to get rod and accidentally grabs the propane heater!
She doesn't say a thing, just takes the rod I hand her and proceeds to fight the fish. As she is fighting the fish I notice shes kinda keeps shaking her right hand. I tell her to keep reeling. We finally land the fish, a 12 pound native. We release the fish and Taylor says "Daddy my hand hurts" I turn my head light on and look at her hand. Oh my GOD! Her palm is all blistered with 3rd degree burns. She was able to fight and land a tough fish with her skin falling off her hand! Not once did she scream or cry. Needless to say, it was off to the hospital we go. They want to see her for the next 3 days and will schedule time with the plastic surgeon. I am just kicking myself in the *** for ever bringing that heater on board. Please everyone, be careful if using a heater on board. There is nothing worse than seeing Daddys little girl hurt that bad. I just want to bawl.

I use those things all the time. they always make me a little nervous when kids aboard. now to rethink using them.sorry about your daughter. Burns hurt more than anything. I 've had buddy get to close with nylon sweat pants. he spent the rest of the trip in what looked like his underwear. the fish gods have been dealing you a folding hand lately.short of not using heat and the rain I'm planning a thursday run down there. Is there any thing going on during the daylight hours? water was up about 4' yesterday at the klickitat had a friend and his partner catch two each and out by noon didn't say how the rest of the boats were doing.. had to drive to portland yesterday and ther were a slug of people banking just below Bonny. and lots of boats.. think they we're all sturg. fishing? i heard the "B" run coho has yet to come in to the system..just here say though??? best wishes to your youngen, be talking to you soon.

I hope that your daughter will be ok.She sounds like A real trooper wish her my best. RON

You might want to look at a new heater I have found that this one seems to be a litte safer than the rest although not as muck heat but it works.

Bumper Chrome,
A lot of fish are being caught both
day and night. Now is the time.
Daughter is doing well. Hand looks
just brutal.
RKB,
I think I will just let everybody put
more clothes on. I'm a little too
nervous to ever put another heater
back in. I will tell people to eat
more food, winter is coming. Gonna
cheat fate again tonight with a fellow
Ifisher. Will report back. images/icons/shocked.gif

FNF, I hope your daughter continues to get better, and thanks for the McN' info.

Bumper_Chrome, I went down from Yakima myself today, fished most of the day. Saw very few caught, but we went 4-for-5, with 3 other quick hits. Fun day for the first try down there.
