Motor is a '07, remote control model, the remote cable bracket is painted steel (magnet tested) , corroding where the remote cables contact it. Has anyone else had this bracket corrode? I also noticed some of the fasteners for the bracket are also steel, and the motor mounting bolts (all this came with the motor). I think I got the T8 FRESHWATER Edition! Steel parts have no business on a salt water boat period.

What brand remote control motor bracket do you have ... The T-8 motor itself has no regular steel on a stock motor at all ...

The bracket in question was made by Yamaha, it came with the motor. You are correct the motor itself does not have any steel that I have found. The question is why make a motor thats fairly corrosion resistant then put a steel bracket on the front?

I have zero corrosion on my T-8. I am still a little vague on the steel bracket in question.

The bracket in question only comes with the remote model, if you have a tiller you don't have it. The bracket holds the throttle cable and the shift cable. The bracket is item 2 in the pic below.

..my guess is that given the complexity of the bracket, cost issues and the loss of control that could result w failure, the engineers (& maybe just maybe the lawyers) choose milder steel vs. stainless for this critical component.

What happens when it rusts to nothing and fails? Still a liability issue even with steel, of coarse then they can call it neglect, oh, and the warranty does not cover corrosion. My guess is its cost driven, since 304 ss is 4 times more than mild steel (316 is 5x more). Why its steel is not the issue, why i have a rusty 10 month old motor is. Sorry just blowing little steam here.:(

The bigger issue is what to do about it. I could go to the dealer and they would probably give me another, but it doesn't fix the problem, it would be corroding again in a year.

samsims Sorry to here about that one but I would for sure get the part replaced while it's under waranty, I would love to make you a custom one, but you think the stainless is expesive! I just have to wonder about the shift & throtle adjustments, were either of them tight? or hit the ends hard. I don't have that bracket but have used my t8 in the salt for 5 years and if this one ever fails will have another. Only Problem I had was the shift cable on mine broke 225 miles from home and I would have Paid much more then the 6 bucks for Item 8 in your Diagram To finnish the vacation trolling "Manual external shifter" I have one now Fits like a champ. And the cable Breakage Was no fault of Yamaha it was mine. Nope I don't sell them but sure wouldn't mind having your's if it's cheap, I like um.

I have both a High Thrust 8 HP and a 9.9 High Thrust. Both electric tilt. One with tiller one with remote steering. No problems for either Yamaha. Both are new within 2 years. I use mine in salt and brackish water. I spray mine down with SALT-X and have had no problems.
