The wife and I went up and fished out of The Fishery today. My wife caught her first keeper. Yes, I made her kiss it. I still
have not caught a keeper, but I did catch my first oversized fish. When I finally got it to to boat, we were forturate to get it to swing along side the boat so we could get an estimate of his length. We estimate it at ten feet give or take six inches. To be honest with you all, that was not even fun. Sure there was some thrill involved, but it was one of the most physically demanding situation I have ever experienced. Maybe a
seven footer is fun, but anything bigger is pushing it unless you have someone that you can tag team with. My arms feel like jello and my whole body aches.
We ended up catching about 25 fish today including one keeper (43") and one oversized.

Bill, I agree about the physical ordeal. I describe it as standing in the bed of your pickup and trying to lift a chevy small block into the truck with a rod and reel.

The tradition on my boat is a fishers first oversize is for him only. Otherwise we tag team em. I'm good for 15 - 20 minutes and then I need a break.

Some things make the job easier. A long stiff rod and a gimbal belt help alot. BWB 1120 by ugly stick is awesome. Black, 8', 40 - 80 test line and one piece. Lots of tuffline is good too, cause sometimes they will just smoke you and you have to let them run.

A Gimbal belt will prevent the dinner plate size bruises on your hip.

You realize of course that you are different now. You'll be back!

I hear you on the gimbal belt. When we bought our sturgeon rods, we stepped up from the Tiger Sticks to the Ugly Stick Customs with the gimbal ends on them for that very reason.
When we got the fish to the boat, my wife was unable to get the hook out so I handed her the pole so I could release it. Well, the pole rolled in her hands so that the guides were pointed down. The weld on the top guide broke. I called Fisherman's and they said they would replace it. The tuff line put some nice cuts in the forward grip as well.
Fighting a fish like that really lets you know how out of shape a person is. Way too much time at a desk. My whole body hurts. I may have got the fish to the boat, but he is having the last laugh. images/icons/grin.gif

Line cuts in the foregrip! Whoo hoo, thats only possible with big daddy or flipper in the ocean.

Don't you just love the feeling of having no control at all of the fish?

Poor mans marlin, the great white sturgeon.

I'm jealous! Sounds like fun! Yeah, I only say that because I've never hauled in an over-sized before!

Now you will need to catch at least one a year. All the rest you can hand off the rod to the other guys that have not experienced real power.....zzzzzzzzzing make the real sing.

That's right Pilar. We hooked over 20 oversized fish in 4 trips fishing that spot. Funny thing is everyone else was fishing up river for them.
And the kid, the kid catches more fish than most people that post on this board. images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/grin.gif

What is really cool is the Bald Eagles that hang out by beacon Rock.

Barnyard,
You should see him play football. 10 years old 5'5" 175 lbs. I would not want to be one of the kids that he hits.

Pilar,
Yeah, the Bald Eagles and the Ospreys up there are awesome to watch.

Good to see the PFD on the big guy. A wrong move and the kid might be swimming.
I will be on vacation all next week and will be there just below that spot in the flats in the clam beds. Taking the summer off ( per the odfw) kinda makes a guy itchy to catch some of those underwater vacumecleaners.

Oh Yeah, PFD's are mandatory in my boat for both of my kids (or any kids for that matter), even when we are on anchor.
