Hi
I thought to just post this on the Salty Dog Thread but like me thee may be some hunters who commecial fish and yet don't care to match wits with fish one on one.
I am about to go back to work on a boat I've been commercial fishing on since 2000. (I'm the cook and deckhand) There are 4 of us including the skipper who I've known since the late 70's. We have not had a crew change since 2000.
One shipmate/deckhand has taken an offer to run another boat so it's time to fill the spot. There is a contender from Wrangle Alaska already but I thought maybe someone on the ifish network (or someone who knows someone) might want to PM me.
With just 4 of us on the 58 foot fiberglass vessel the opening would need to be filled by someone who has long line fished and dressed halibut before. Most or many vessel with simular fishing goals as the boat I am on have 5 people on board.
It's a safety first type of fishing vessel and we deliver a lot of our catch to Seward but also end up in ports from Ketchikan to Sand Point. None of us smoke and it is a dry boat. A person can have a drink of the boat but being sheets to the wind back at the boat where we usually are every night in port or out at sea is not permitted. A healthy sense of humor is always appreciated though.
We seldom catch halibut over 80 lbs because we fish 80 miles off shore where the boat motion combined with our small circle hooks allow the larger fish to break free.
Long line fishing is unlike the Discovery Show on King Crab Fishing. I like to call it The Most Tedious Catch.
As I mentioned before I've known the skipper since 1970's. he is not affraid to hire people who he or someone on the boat does not know personally. References are a big plus though.
We now return you to the usual and more acceptable Hunting Topics. With any luck I'll retire from fishing before another spot opens up on the boat.
