I'm getting the stuff today to start my first rod. What is the differance between rainbow and standard looking guides. Is it just for looks?
Thanks
Jeremy

I'm not 100% sure but I think it is just the finish.

From what I have read and been told is all guides with color, gold, rainbow, blue, red, etc.... will eventually rub off.... may take years depending on use.

The colored guide inserts from Forecast, Batson Enterprises, and I think the colored inserts from others as well are coatings that are deposited by what is called PVD or Physical Vapor Deposition. The coating, which is even harder than the underlying Zirconium, is vaporized in a vacuum chamber and then the particles are accelerated with high voltage and impact the zirconium at high velocity and as a result are partially embedded into the zirconium substrate. The coating materials are extremely hard and durable and will not rub or wear off. The blue coating is Titanium Oxide, the silver is Titanium Hydrogenation and the gold colored coating is Titanium Nitrate. I am not sure what the rainbow or multi-colored material is.

i just wanted to know if its a performance thing between the rainbows and the standards. From what i hear its not a performance thing its a science thing.

It's a preference thing, like chrome wheels, fish can't see the until they are in the net!!

someone email the discovery channel on "how it's made". I'd like to see the process of coloring the rings and frames. American Tackle was the first to release those type of guides and I'd have to give them credit, they do look sweet. Any rod will definately stand out.
