What are the best methods of removing corrosion and surface rust from rod guides.
I just bought a baitcast rod reel combo from my buddy. It is in quality shape and looks to be worth the money he charged me. The reel alone would cost $50-$60 brand new.
The only problem is the guides on the rod have light rust, and green corrosion on them. Like the same kind of green corrosion you would see on an old penny.
I gave the rod a nice wipedown with windex and a paper towel, and buffed out the surface corrosion off of the guides with some alcohol swabs. Afterwards there was still alot of corrosion present.
My idea would be to use steel wool, or maybe a brass toothbrush. Should I oil them or use light solvent?? I just dont want to make the rod weak or take the finish off in the process of making the guides look clean.
Also what should I coat the guides with after all of the corrosion is removed? I was thinking clear nail polish??
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks,
