We have a 40 horse yamaha that is oil injected and it sound like a garbage disposal. Compression is 115+ on all holes but the sound of this thing is terrible. Any ideas, shot gears of some sort ???? If it needs a complete overhaul I priced the parts online and it is cheaper to deep six it. If somebody is a wizard let me know of some things I might look for.

Where is the noise coming from? Does the motor operate normally short of the noise? (normal acceleration, top speed, rpm, etc)

I'd bet your powerhead is fine, the tiniest bit of bearing or anything like that going through a motor will drop compression on a cylinder like a bad habit.

Good power throughout, just a rattle/grinding sound. Similar sound to the 260 & 292 inline six chev engines at highway speeds but much louder. One guy said it's shot, another said run her til she dies. Not like there is a fortune into it but dang I'd like to quiet the bugger down.
