Does anyone have any ideas for keeping your bait cleaner when fishing inside the bay. I use those colored "golf tees" above my swivels and those do keep my swivels a little cleaner. I've seen people using these 2" red rudders a few feet above their bait. Does that help? I realize nothing will keep it completly clean but after yesterday, I'm looking for some different tackle rigging ideas. Thanks!

If you have any spinner making wire, you can fashion a 2 sided device with a twist in the center and 2 arms about 2" long. This is sort of like a spreader, but no twists on the ends. About mid way in a 5' leader you tie in a bead chain swivel, above that a T-Bead, (cone shaped bead), then slide down the wire device, and then the rest of your leader up to your spreader and droppper for your lead line. This is not a cure all, but will certainly help a great deal. Just my 2 cents worth!! images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Remember the old click type pens? The type that you push the top down to expose the writing end? Well take the lower end off one of those and from the narrow tapered end cut it just long enough to just cover the swivel. This works to keep the swivel clean. If you can get one of those pens ends large enough so that your line will turn freely inside you can make them a little longer to help cover the bead chain as well. Thsi had worked in Nehalem Bay but have not tried it in Tillamook. Hope this makes sense and is somewhat helpful.

Great ideas! Drachir, your idea sounds perfect! I will it a try. I wonder if it will affect my perfect roll? images/icons/smile.gif

Lipripper, that pen casing idea sounds great. I'm a gonna do it next time out. The guys on this site detail a "craap-catcher" which I have seen work well for riggers.

I use a 3 cc syringe that I modify by removing the plunger and grinding off the ears. They cover a 6 bead chain swivel perfectly. Doesnt keep the weed off but keeps the swivel clean preventing line twist and makes cleaning the weed off 100% easier.
You can buy them at Safeway (at least here in Salem ) for $9-12 per hundred. This is just the syringe body no needles.

those are all great ideas but a little too much work for my taste. I was at T-Bay last weekend and I simply used a rubber band tied above my terminal gear on my mainline. Just put a rubber band about a foot or two above your spreader bar, bead chain, etc. and you will have far less problems with weeds on your gear. Good Luck!

GBSkunk,
It should not have any affect on your bait, it will just keep the D##M seaweed off for a little while longer. It has proven pretty effective for me in the past, Good Luck!! images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Seaweed is frustrating, especially if it is heavy. You do need to keep your line in the water, but I have caught many of my salmon on the drop after checking and cleaning my bait (I drop it down slowly). I think the roll is different as it is falling back to the bottom or something. Even if there is no seaweed, I pull it up every so often to get that drop. It is one of the funnest bites there is as you have the rod in hand and you are feeding him.
