I wanted to get some thoughts on everyone's favorite knot for tying onto swivels. I don't know what happened today, but had one knot break very easily on a snag and another one while setting the hook on a fish. I can't remember the last time that happened and wondered if anyone had any thoughts. I'm wondering if I just got a bad spool of line (Maxima Ultragreen).

FF-
First of all is the line old? Next, are you using big swivels and little line? I have had trouble in the past with to large swivel and smaller line when I could not find the right size in the T box.
I agree with Crusin on the double clinch but try doubling up the line on its self and then tying a regular I C knot. I use this in the lower river and in the ocean and I feel It gives an extra added strength to the rig.
Also the trileen(sp) knot (on that brand of lines box or on there web page I think)is a good knot as well.
Lastly try spooling off 10 feet of line or so and then re rigging every trip. The line gets knicked and stuff from the abuse of going down the river bottom drift fishing. Line is cheap replace it if you don't trust it any more.
Hope this helps some

Many people have there favorite knot and some you may have heard of, but never seen. Here is a great site that will actually show you in animation how to tie the knots. http://www.marinews.com/fishing/fk_main.htm
Snipping off the last 6ft of line is what I do after my fisihing trip. Sometime a couple of times during fisihne!
Goodluck!
Great link Thick-n-thin. I am going to save that one

Thanks for the feedback. The line is from a leader spool that I just bought. It hasn't sat in the sun at all. I buy small quantities so the line doesn't sit around too long and get old. I will try the double clinch. The knots that broke so easily were improved clinch. Anyone have any luck with the Trilene knot on mono? I use it with very good success on braids but don't know about using it on mono.

I use the Trilene knot to tie to the swivel (#7 black barrel) with Maxima UG and Chameleon in 10lb and 12lb test with ALL my (several hundred) pre-tied steelhead rigs. Just be careful to
(a)spit on the mono as as not to burn the line,
(b)make certain that the twin wraps around the swivel's eye are next to each other and not overlapping, and
(c) that the knot seats very tightly -- I pull the knot extra tight, then as a check when I'm down with it (I think), I hold the swivel and pull on the leader. One time in five the knot begins to 'unravel'. If it does, spit on it again and re-tighten. If the knot doesn't seat well or the leader looks 'burned', cut off and re-tie.
Testing with handscales, the Trilene knot is a 100% knot. The easier to tie (esp. on the river with cold hands) Palomar knot is about 85% -- close to what you get with a uniknot.
