Got all the parts and the butts are attached but need someone to install the guides so the rod doesn't end up looking like I did it. If anyone in the SW Beaverton to Hillsboro area can do it, I'd be more than happy to give you the business.

I have some other rods I'd like to rebuild if I can completely strip the blanks without ruining them. How much heat can I apply to the aluminum Aftco seats without ruining the blank? Is there a recommended way?

Thanks for your help.

As for removing the seat, I recently read the manufacturer of U-40 Rod on another site told somone how to do it...... This guy had built a rod with hundred in components, and he had his reel seat off by 1/4". The answer was:

Get a large cooker full of water (probably a crab cooker or canner would work great)... bring it to a boil.... do not put the rod in until the water is boiling.... put the butt of the rod in the hot water... that will heat it up... you will need to use gloves to grip the reel seat..... I would put it in for 30 seconds give it a try and then do another 30 seconds.... etc....

Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice. I tried it on a gimbal first to see what would happen.....nothing did. Grabbed the propane torch.....still wouldn't budge.

This leads me to another question. I need to shorten the grips on a couple of rods and was wondering if I can saw up to an inch and a half off the butt end without ruining the rod? The blanks are 7' 6" heavy E-glass type.

Here's the deal.... I've got four rods that need to be wrapped and finished. Doesn't anyone around me want the business????

I cut off reel seats with my dremel and a carbide cutting wheel ...
They are usually built up with tape or bushings to apply the seat ...
Never messed a rod up yet , Knock on wood ...

You sure can. I have done it to a few rods that I wanted to remove the gimbal(who needs a gimbal on a 30# or even 40# rod for that matter) and shorten the butt end.

More heat, but be careful. I always try to cool the rod down quickly after getting the parts off to avoid having too much heat dissipate through the epoxy to the blank.

Fishkisser;

These are Aftco aluminum seats.... Don't want to destroy them at $22 ea. Guess I'll just cut the Butts and take a chance...... Looks like I gotta take another trip to Woodland on Monday.
