Sometimes I get frustrated trying to get people to write, volunteer, etc... for our fisheries.
I was thinking, perhaps one of the ifish ready, set... contests could be used for motivation... I may do that next time. Like show me that you have sent a letter, or the first person to compose a letter of support, then I'll either draw from a bag, or choose the first person to send one?
Ideas?
Buy support?

Thank you Jennie. In addition to letters, I put a positive word in for the broodstock programs in the next Dec./Jan. STS column - for whatever that's worth. Write your letters fishers; to Jen's link above to Marty's broodstock addy, and to ODFW & WDFW about anti-snagging enforcement improvement. Get involved. images/icons/smile.gif

Kim Katsion wrote a fine example of an easy to read, consice, non confrontational (nor overly emotional) letter in support of the broodstock program.
If you are at a loss as to what to write, work from this, but get your letter out quickly! We only have till the 18th or 19th!
Thank you, Kim!

Mr. Chairman,
Having had the pleasure of fishing with you on the
Wilson river, I know you are very familiar with that
brood stock program and hope you will voice you
support of the Nestucca river program.
As you know I am an avid angler and I would like to
add my name to the growing list of supporters of the
above mentioned program.
Using a few wild fish for this program will not impact
the wild run of steelhead on the Nestucca river as
proven by the survey done by the Oregon Wildlife
Heritage Foundation. There is plenty of statistics to
overrule the rhetoric of a few individuals.
I would encourage you to listen to the intelligent
voices in this argument as Marty Peterson guide, Pat
Hoglund of Fishing and Hunting News, Oregon Wildlife
Heritage Foundation and many more that want to see the
protection of the wild fish along with providing an
opportunity for all of us to continue to fish for
hatchery fish.
I know with every new project there is always money
and/or volunteers needed to monitor and such. Please
know that this project is important enough to many
people and we will all help in any way needed.
As a former county commissioner I know how time
consuming it is to sift through and decipher the facts
from fiction. I recognize the difficulty of your
position and thank you for doing a thankless job.
Kim
Congrats to Marty Peterson and everyone who made their voices heard! Read on....

For Immediate Release October 19, 2001
Commission Approves Hatchery Production Changes in Nestucca Basins
SEASIDE - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission Friday approved rules to implement a new hatchery fish brood stock program for the Nestucca River using winter steelhead native to the basin to eventually replace current hatchery stock that is foreign to the basin.
Substitution of smolts from a locally adapted brood stock program for a portion of the current stock was proposed through Oregon's Salmon Trout Enhancement Program. Implementation will have the effect of extending a hatchery winter steelhead fishery into late winter and reduce potential impacts to wild fish.
The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission adopts rules and policies for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) to implement. The six-member body meets monthly in locations throughout the state.
The Nestucca River program is made possible by outside funding from the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation and extensive use of volunteers. The program calls for the collection of steelhead adults from an average annual return estimated in 2001 at about 10,000 fish. Protection for wild adults would continue through ongoing monitoring, catch and release regulations for unmarked wild fish, and the retention of marked hatchery fish.
