Hello All,
I'm going to shortly be jumping into the fly tying world. This will be for my own use and enjoyment. Based on my personal biases and quite a bit of internet research, I've narrowed my likely vise options down to the HMH Spartan and the Dyna-King Kingfisher.
Do any of you have any direct comparisons between these vises? Any opinions about either? They each are relatively simple, well built and extremely functional. I'll be trying each one out in the coming weeks.
Thanks for any words of wisdom.

I just got the kingfisher pedestal model last week and have to say I really really like it. My only complaint is the base is a little small and tends to move a little on really big hooks, however you can buy a bigger base as an accessory. I talked with the guy at the fly shop about the two you are looking at, and he reccommended the Kingfisher. I give it two thumbs up and would definitely reccommend it as a first vise. If you want to upgrade later down the road don't make the mistake of buying a cheap vise from the get go as you will spend more money replacing it with cheap vises than you will buying one of the caliber you are describing.

go with the kingfisher. i've used both on different occasions, and i definitely like the dyna-king better. the hmh just feels like a slightly modified thompson "a"..... not that those are bad vices either.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be taking a tying class soon and the shop has both models available for use during the class.
I can't wait to start...

I have a Spartan and an $80 Danvise. I love the sleek machined look and functionality of the Spartan. For some weird reason I keep going back to my Danvise when I want to tie a complicated fly. It just works better for me.

I have to agree with Kbris. The Dan Vise is a great value and very functional.
