I am going to start making spinners for my wife and I ...
I have a heavy cast iron wire forming tool made by Herters ...
Do you spinner fabricators use a wire former or a couple pair of needle nose pliers ...
Or both ... Thanks in advance for the info ... Barney

Barney, did you even TRY the search function??:D JK. I've always wanted to say that. :D I use pliers and they work well for me. And i know spinner makers better than me do the same. I've never tried a spinner maker but know of some folks that love them and some that don't like them. Just practice and you'll figure out what's going to work best for you. There's nothing like when a chinook attacks your creation !!! Good luck.

I use a small spinner making tool that looks like a little "c" clamp. I buy the wire shafts with one preformed loop already in place. Just slide on the components and use the tool to twist the wire around the hook. It does a good fast job and is really easy to use. It must be easy if I can do it.

i use a pair of needle nose pliers that are round on the jaws,i got them well..........ok at a craft store, thats right a womans sewing store got a problem with that? just kiddin but yeah they were only $4.99 and they work better than anything i've used.there for making jewelry and you'll be amazed of all the great ideas you'll get from the supplies at craft stores, great chrome and brass beads, and i found these small ceramic beads that i like to use right under my clevis, the ceramic does not wear like other beads so it will make the blade spin like its on an oiled bead, try it!about the wire go to g.i joes and find the shark fishing wire leader(comes in a coiled package)#10 or #11 for steelies you can make a hundred shafts for $3,alot better than the premade shafts and no waste, hope that helps ya...tights lines!

Try your Herter's tool and see what you think.
I use a round-bend plier.
Found a tutorial with some good illustrations of my method :

I prefer a wider, conventional for the second plier instead of the needle-nose shown in the tutorial.

I'll second that, it's good to not worry about wasting a little wire just trim the excess.

I've made lots of spinners using needle nose pliers, and that's the way Rob Brown from R and B Lures does it and many other good spinner makers too. But my kids got me a Twistech (they got it at Sportsmans Warehouse) for Christmas and I can make perfect loops and tight twists in less than half the time it took to make less than perfect ones with my needlenose pliers.

Twistech and Boggs are great tools for low numbers of spinners. If you are building for personal use, I like the Boggs best, but either one is good.
I use pliers because I get into my groove and can wrap 3 in the time I can do one on a tackle maker because you have to do two steps. 1> form the "R" bend 2> switch posiotions to wrap the "eye".
For wrapping 10 to 25 it is ok. Right now I have 3000 to wrap before the sportsman show starts on Wednesday. I need to get into a groove and do it fast! So I go with the pliers.

I use spinners almost all the time. I have made my own for years and I used to use pliers. The way I do it now is to make the spinner directly on the leader and use a plastic easy change clevis. Have a box with all beads and blades in it then tie up your spinner in the boat as needed. I have caught hundreds of fish on spinners over the last 25yrs and the leader type works just as well and they are easier than trying to store dozens of pre-made spinners. jm:twocents:
