I have been making my own spinners for steelhead for almost a year now, but after recently reading Jed Davis' book I wanted to approach spinner fishing the way he does. I bought size 4.5 blades and matched them with size 4 bodies, but to my surprise the spinner doesn't work correctly. Instead of remaining straight in the water, the shaft spins like crazy causing a lot of line twist.

If anybody who has made spinners with Pen-tac components could assess my problem it would be appreciated as the silver plated components weren't cheap and I'd like to make the most of them.

Lots of things can help.
1> One up the size of the swivel! Use a #7 instead of a #10.

2> What size clevis are you using? You should have a #2 or #3. Too small of a clevis or too heavy of a wire will cause more friction on the wire. This friction causes the swivel to carry the wire and all parts on the wire to rotate fast, causing line twist.

3> If you are not using 2 small bearings under your clevis, try rebuilding them with two bearings.

4> Buy R & B Parts (sorry could not resist) but you do get a 10 hour a day support number with each purchase:D. Tuesday thru Sunday (sometimes Monday)

Thanks for the insight, and I'll have to check into your spinner accessories because I'm unsatisfied with my Pen-tac order.

I want to add that its not so much that the shaft is twisting, its that it is following the path of the arrow drawn in on the picture. Its probably better described as a wobble. I prefer the shaft to remain still in the water and just have the blade spin around it, rather than the hole thing going in circles.

Any further suggestions, or is this typical with a 0.032 blade thickness?

Not typical of .032 blades at all. PM an address and i will send you a sample of a spinner with our .032 polished silver that matches the 4.5 blade almost identical. I guarantee it will fish right!

I sure hope you sent him your address.
Always check your gear they get pretty beat up on the rocks. If any part is not right It goes back in the box to be rebuilt. I wish I could see the beads and clevis better, to tell if they are in running shape. How does the finished end look where you tie up. If this is to big it wobble I think. I try to keep them as tight as possible.

the 4.5 blade is known to have some serious flutter but not what your describing,i can only see 2 things that i wont do.

1.dont slide the body over the shaft like that.rather make a loop below the body just as you did on the upper eye,a spinner really should have every part free spinning to avoid line twist.
2.lose the swivel and tie straight to your spinner,it will have less line twist trust me.

also hold your spinner by the top eye..the blade should lay almost flat against the body if the beads are too big and the blade is lying at an angle it will spin funny.i use a #2 clevis and pinch it down slightly w/needle nose pliers,it helps the blade lay closer to the body because the #3 clevis has too big a hole for the shaft size you need for steelies and you will get more wobble from that too....notice the #3 has not only too much play in the hole size but takes an extra 1/16" of your shaft and that is alot when ya want to keep your spinners as small as possible.
