Does anyone have any experience building surf rods used for bank sturgeon fishing?
Rod will be 12ft Lamiglas Surf blank. Will be using line 25lb-40lb. 6oz-10oz lead. Set up will be for conventional reels only.
I like to stick with the Fuji brand guides.
Can I get by with just NLG and NSG guides? Not sure if their frame can handle through the test of time. Any frame flex can cause the ceramic to shatter or fall out.
I can go with BHNLG or HNSG but I would sacrifice weight.
Can anyone recommend one that they've had good experiences with?
I would like to build a rod that would have guides that are light weight, but can last for years down the road.

Rainshadow , Pac Bay , and Fuji make single foot guides up to size 30 ...
That would take care of the frame flex... Oh shoot not a spinning rod ... D oh ..
OK take a look at Fuji hardalloy boat rod guides or something similar ...
Pac Bay makes what they call a turbo guide it looks like flex wouldn't bother the ceramic ring on it ... Barney:wave:

Thanks Barney, I went ahead and went with BMNAG guides and a PST sic tip as recommended by Ron Arra's book. About 1/2 way done with the rod.

Is that silver halo metallic with Blue halo Metallic? Looks nice. Like the cord wrap handles.
If had used the Pac Bay or Am Tak Turbo guides you wouldn't need to worry about flex

I used Fuji BMNAG Alconites (meant for med-hvy casting) for this rod for strength and lightness for this rod meant for sub 30lb test for bank fishing.
The blue thread is a blue prizm braid by Gudebrod. Guide wraps are pearl prizm thread and royal blue prizm thread.
Can't wait to test it on spring chinook plunking.

I used NLGs on my 15' lamiglas about 4 years ago. I have had several sealions on with 100# hard line and 100# mono leader and I have never had a problem with anything but leader breaking. What you have will work fine. See ya at the river.

Yeah I've had some decent luck on NLG's in the past, pretty reliable, but the frames appeared to be weak and pretty easy to bend.
HNLGs were something I would have considered, but the BMNAG's were something recommended to be pretty durable.

Looking good , good luck with the springers ...
Nice job. Almost looks like a Hawaiian Surf rod without the 1 foot chrome plated brass or stainless steel butt cap (to stick it in a hole in the rocks, no spike needed).
