Something to get the juices going in the new forum. You all saw Pinky #3 upstairs in the community forum, well it looks like Pinky #4 isn't far away. More on that one later - tease - tease.
OK on the spinny turner thingy is another gift rod that is under construction. The blank is a Seeker 665 6'6" rated 20-50# and is destined for duty as a trolling rod for Albacore. At this point the underwraps are all done, Black with a three turn center wrap of HT Electra Gold and 10 turn trim bands of the same HT Electra Gold. The reel seat is a perfection aluminum and oh so purple, 10" slick butt with mushroom butt cap and 12" hypolon front grip. Guides Pac Bay Turbo Boat guides with the Blue Halo zircon rings, spiral wrapped. I have not made up my mind on the wraps yet, but I suspect the second layer will be purple nylon with CP added, than overwrapped in Sulkey White Pearl Metallic.
Here is a pick of the underwrap

THANKS Jennie!!!! I just finished a couple of ice fishing rods, constructed from broken rod parts. Nothing fancy, but I'll put 'em to the test this weekend.

haven't built any rods in years...maybe I'll have to get back into that again...but since this is the "Rod and Tackle building" fourm, I just bought a Boggs Tacklemaker from a fellow ifisher, and have been building salmon and steelhead spinners! it's MUCH eaiser then it used to be, and more friendly to the hands as well, espically when working with that heavy gage salmon wire....:D

No I didn't take a picture of your rod - there is one from iFishstock but I couldn't find the right one - than there was the pic of Bill or someone else looking at it wondering why the guides were not straight. I have pics of Pinky#1 and Pinky #3, but not pinky #2 - oh the humanity.
It was a fun project - did you catch a fishie on it yet?

OK I will play
This is a Lamiglass blank
Slick butt
Fuji reel seat
I bought the blank at the Anglers Workshop along with all the parts
The #s on the blank were not able to be matched up with the rating due to it being an out dated blank
but my guess is it is rated at 30-50
Great feel in my hands
And a big thanks to Stickfish for his help and advice

I hope this is tackle-related enough?
I was tired of seeing my travel rod tubes piled up in a corner. And I noticed this un-utilized space, located in the stairway that goes up to the attic. The wall space located over the doorway was too short for full length rod tubes but perfect for travel tubes.
So last week I made this rod tube rack to fit the space. Room for 8 rod tubes and completely out of the way. 3" dia. holes in the upper piece; 2.25" recessed holes in the bottom.
Here's a pic looking back down the stairway:

Here is the pic of Pinky #2 I was trying to find
http://www.mcube.net/images/Ifishstock2007/ifs07_10.jpg
Here is Bill, er I think, looking at the screwy sprial wrapped guides - even Kilches getting into the act - "Hey mom, check out the wild pink rod."
http://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/medium/PIC00057.JPG
I never did take a good pic of the wrap colors, but it was Gudebrod Hot Pink nylon with CP and 8 wraps of Gudebrod Purple nylon trim bands. Maybe we can get Jennie to take a pick of a wrap.
The guys at anglers must really think I'm nuts or well - never mind. Was in there again today with another Pink blank - Pinky #4. Pinky #4 will be part of a His and Her's pair of Live Bait Tuna sticks that will be part of the auction at the Salty Dog Convention this year. 7' 12-25# E-Glass, with hard chrome salt water boat guides, 8" and 12" Hypolon grips, Fuji nylon salt water reel seat

I'm wrapping a Calstar 270 in the classic "deckhand" style. Perfection stainless guides, carbide tip, triple wrapped, flexcoat finish. Best of all will be the cork-tape grip. I've got a Newell 332 to put on it. It will be an awesome tuna rod for casting or trolling with 25# line.

Something to think about on that cork tape is protecting it from unwrapping and getting abused by the reel clamp. Freakwater wrapped a couple of those last year and found some heavy duty electrical shrink wrap. Two inches or so on each end and a chunk in the middle to bugger the reel clamp. When I do some of that style I'll do the same thing it looked really good

That is a very good idea Ted....it beats the electrical tape I've been using on each end. Thanks.

I have tied up 5 rods in the last year or so including 2 sages that just came off the turner last night. One was the 290 tied for spinning and wrapped with green and silver trim and the other was a 296 tied for casting and wrapped in green and gold trim.
the 296 will be taken out for its first trip tomorrow so I am very excited!!!
I have a sage 3113 that I am thinking of stripping down and rebuilding. I was considering going from double foot guides to single but I dont want to have a nasty looking area where the blank used to be covered by wraps/epoxy. I was planning to do an underlay much like the tuna rods I see here but I have never tied a a guide any other way than directly to the blank. Do you guys have any advice? Do you guys epoxy over you underlay before you continue with the top layers??? I have flex coat light and regular so would the light be used for epoxying the underlay??? So many questions!
thanks for any insight you choose to share.

I do apply finish over my underwraps. I have done it without, but I turned the rod the opposite direction for the 2nd wrap and used size A for both. It worked ok, but it was an expirement. Guys at Anglers recommend using CP, but I just use my regular finish, flood, drip, heat and drip. If you decide to try without finish or just using CP. First layer should be size A and second Size D, so it doesn't dig down between your first wrap (guess you could use size C). That larger thread on that light guide will not look good.
Why not, re-paint the rod, cover with perma gloss and have at it. You should be able to get the blank paited for $20

If you camera is already in macro mode - check the size of you Auto Focus area. Reduce its size so it doesn't lock on the clutter behind it. I have to do that with my Lumix

Grady Looks like your shutter speed was too slow to hold by hand if it was below 1/25 that would be why its still blurry - sometimes I have to use flash and that usually ruins the finer details for me. I'm about to put some more light in the "Play Room" eyes are getting old or the sun is getting dimmer

How do you like that Madierra thread - sort of don't like the size of the spools but I can over come that by wrapping it on old use spools - they sure have some nice colors - do they darken like the rest of them?

I really like the madiera for the colors. It took me some getting used to for the finish. I don't really like using CP, but with Madiera it is a must!!! I do the same thing with the old spools, I also do the same thing with the big 10 oz spools as well.... transfer to smaller ones.
When I dont use CP, you can actually watch the finish soak into the thread, makes me feel like it would be stronger... kind of like fiberglass resin and fibers in my mind.... seal the fibers first and it is not as strong??
With madiera if you don't use CP it is fisheye heaven...... And wow does the color ever darken.... not even close to the shade you started with... I used some dark blue one time without CP, and it turned so dark you could not tell it from the black blank..... With CP it doesn't darken much....

Yep.. mine came from a sewing store.... Madiera is originally an embrodery thread. That's nice to know it comes in smaller spools. My neighbors sister owns a sewing machine store in Albany, and got me mine. :)
Saw your post the other day on Allcoast, that you had used it for the first time and didn't like it.

Cork grips, exposed blank reel seat, Ti Framed SiC Fuji Concept guides (chrome finished), wrapped standard. Will probably use HT Electra Halo Green. Not sure about the trim bands yet.
The handle is done, will start laying out the guides soon - pics to follow.

The Lami is done, but waiting for the butt wrap. While I'm waiting for a tool to come in the mail, I started three more rods, one for HiTekRdNek which is a Seeker CJBF60Hb 6' 40-60# for Halibut and Tuna, 10" slick butt, Purple Aftco reel seat, 12" hypolon front grip, Spiral wrapped using Am Tac Turbo Boat Guides with the Blue Halo ring, underwraps in Blue HT Electra with gold in the middle and purple nylon over wraps, first will be without CP, third will be with CP all size A. Should have a pic of the test wrap up tomorrow. Oh I hear it gets to wear a Avet Pro 30 narrow in purple.
Other two are Rainshadow SW597' Composit 7'10" will have Tennessee rear grips, trigger reel seat and 5" hypolon front grips, spiral wrapped in either royal blue or dark blue to match the Avet MXJ's that I picked up for them. These will be used for keeper Sturgeon, iron for tuna, maybe even some live bait, ocean salmon and other fun things.
Then, next up will be stream's rods (start those next week), a Seeker 665, 10" slick butt, black and gold reel seat, 12" hypolon front grip, Am Tac Turbo Boat guides with the gold halo ring, underwrapped in black with goldenrod, overwrapped in goldenrod (to match his Northriver). Those gold halo guides with the yellow wraps will be amazing.
Then up come Stream's live bait rods 3 Calstar T270 7' with the same reel seats, goldenrod wraps, spiral wrapped.

just put a lamiglas LSJ841(7'0, 6-10lb) up on the dryer today. i wanted to get back into bass fishing, so i figured i'd build myself a nice bass rod. got a killer deal on that XMG50 blank -- $55 before shipping, since it's discontinued. i wanted a baitcasting setup for drop-shot fishing and jigging, and all the factory rods feel way, way too heavy for me(i'm a steelhead fisherman, using 15lb line for 3lb green fish is a little more than alien to me...)
so i had to do it myself.
i used some spendy cork on the grips, stainless framed zirconia ring batson guides, and wrapped it with sunburst thread, which matches the reel i bought for it(a daiwa sol) dead on. it's so light, that with the reel on, it balances out 1/2" in front of the reel seat! can't wait to use it as soon as things warm up.
