Well, I headed out to the Hospital Hole this morning. Got there at 1/2 hour before dark and fished till 10:00 am. Used slip bobber rig with eggs and shrimp. Nada. Lot of rolling fish there. Big ones too, but seemed dark. About 15 other unlucky fisherman were there also. Saw what appeared to be a Jack landed, and a small coho landed and released. That was it. Lots more folks down a ways from HH, and also some over in the slough... nada for them too.
So then headed to the Handicap Access site on the Tillamook River not far from the Hospital Hole. Nada. About 10 folks there. Nada. Although we saw a couple big ones roll in the river.
Headed up to the Nehalem River. Nada. And yes.. more rolling fish.
So to keep sane, we decided to hit the Barview Jetty for some rockfishing and a change of pace. Caught about 8 small perch =) haha.
Soo... what the heck? The waters seem to be filled with fish, but just no action. We talked to people all over the Tbay and Nahelam area, and almost EVERYONE was getting skunked.
Matt
P.S. Fishing aside, was a beautiful day out there today, though =), and always a good day when spent with friends!

Thanks for the report Matt. At least the weather was nice even if the catching was not. Sounds like you really tried your best to find a bite. Better luck on your next trip.

Stew and Gary Till and I tried a hunch yesterday by putting the driftboat in the Trask River 101 gravel bar launch and drifting (rowing actually images/icons/smile.gif ) from there to the 5th Ave. launch/take out. Very little pressure - none in the long section above the 2 bit hole. We only saw a couple fish role on our half day drift. I hooked and lost one big 'nook on a slow rowing trolled Kwikfish against the incoming tide (GT on the oars), and C&R'd about a 17" searun cutt earlier that hit that big K-15. It's amazing what those cutts will hit! Gary mimicked the fish by quoting it as having said "now there is something I think will fill me up, maybe". A few fishermen we talked to said no fish on in the 2 bit hole (until we trolled Kwikfish thru it) and only a couple hooked in the old stump/sandbar hole. I haven't been thru there in a few years. What happened to the stump? The water felt cool enough by hand touch (didn't have a thermometer). But over a burger and pancake lunch we had at the Guide Shop images/icons/grin.gif, owner Pete Peterson says he is sure the water is just too warm yet for good biting conditions in the lower river. Like 'Yall said "It's getting to where we should maybe send a $35,000 check to the Yak Tribe to do another rain dance?" Hey, anything that will bring some needed rain! We can't use another drought season!!!!!

Ah, so sounds like warmer temperatures, not enough rain, and lunar conditions are keeping the fish in lockjaw mode.
Thats good information to know =). Sounds like I should pay a bit more attention to the weather and solunar calendar and plan my fishing accordingly. Thanks much for the info guys!

Amen, just what is the deal with T-Bay Salmon? I fished the lower bay on Sunday for bupkiss. Only saw one netjob all day in the CG hole. By 11:00 am the ghost hole was clearing out as people went elswhere looking for biters. The bar was closed all day, good thing cuz' the surf was up big.
The crabbing is good though. All of them were hard too. 3 limits for 2 or 3 hours effort. We saw something I've never seen in the bay before while crabbing. We set adrift while waiting for the next round of trap checks. As we drifted with the wind the boat passed over vast schools of Candlefish. They were darting and sparkling all around the boat. It looked like they were feeding on something. Also the water is full of plankton. Cloudy with it.
Did anyone bag a salmon in T-Bay Sunday?

Avoided Tillamook, but scored a 30# hen in the Nehalem Saturday morning. Saw a few others caught. There was a good bite at the jaws after the ocean laid down Saturday morning, but the bite pretty much went off as the sun climbed. Sunday was pretty much a no show, only saw 1 fish before we had to leave at 11am. Ocean was too rough to get close. Beautiful weather though and judging from the reports, one king was more than most.

******,
Might I suggest a pair of suspenders. images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/shocked.gif
Was hoping to get over the bar at first light but noooooo, not happening today. The coast guard was at the mouth keeping boats away and there were breakers just outside, all the way across both jetty's
Fished the ghost hole, coast guard station, and bay city...zero...zip.....nada.
I did see Pilar pass us with his female guest reeling like crazy, was that a fish Pilar images/icons/wink.gif !

FM2, no that was 'sled on'. My pretty guest had crossed lines with a sled full of penguins going the other way. She just kept letting line out until I figured it out. What can I say, my friends are from Wisconsin and it was their first rodeo.
Then she yelled fish on and away we went.
It was worth a good laugh later over barley pop and crab.
LOL......That will be a good story for a long time!
