When we lived in McMinnville, I bowled in a league with the manager of the local McDonald's, and told him they made absolutely the worst tasting coffee on the face of the planet, and should pour it back into the horse. He didn't disagree, but said he couldn't do anything about it, since it's prepackaged images/icons/rolleyes.gif

So, whenever my nephew asks if I want to go fishing, I remind him that I'll bring the coffee, but Union 76 can furnish the junk food!

Boater,
That was proboably the funniest post I have ever read, probably because it is so easliy related to.
images/icons/rolleyes.gif
Very short, precise and to the point.
Let`s go fishing and I`ll bring the coffee.
You have a preference for fresh ground or standard folgers type?
I`m still laughing every time think of that post..

Hate to bring up the obvious, but you bought it at McDonald's, for crying out loud. Their coffee is used to clean the grill.

SL, I try to avoid the fastfood chain outlets. But I still KNOW they don't clean the grill; bad coffee or no coffee. images/icons/grin.gif They might wipe it a couple times a day with a moist cloth that had fallen on the floor, but that's what you get anywhere they employee at the minimum wage. Reality. Period.

Again, don't be mad at the messenger.

After our first experiment gone bad in my chem. class our TA wrote "Would you like fries with that?" in big letters on the blackboard and had us repeat it a few times.

He had us do this because, and I quote "If you people don't get this @hit figured out this is what you are going to have to memorize in your next job."

Boater,
I usually fish Commencement bay,
Elliott bay, or the lower Green.
There are a lot of bright silvers in there right now and some of them are pretty good sized.
What about yourself?

Back from my self imposed exile from ifish. I may be posting on this particular thread for real! My wonderful employer has requested HUGE wage and benefit concessions ala Freightliner Corp. whom we are a major supplier to. With the already large cut I took because of my disability and the big increases in out-of-pocket expenses for health and welfare I cannot afford to work at the company I have given 25 years of my life to. So look for me in the future at your local McDonalds or Target or GI Joes or Fisherman's or who knows? Trickle down economics revisited!!!!!

Boater,
The lower green is the Duwamish,
I`ve been fishing primarily by the Tuckwila Community Center but have tried down by the Boeing foot bridge, the Annex tavern, The Riverside,,etc...
We should get together, swap lies and share techniques for catching them,,
there are still some beautiful chromies in there pushing 17lb or better.
I don`t know why but that post still cracks me up...
Sorry to hear about your predicament Stew,
with these layoffs Boeing is proposing, I may not be awfully far behind you..

Right now I try and fish it after work whenever I can.
It`s close by the house and it has fish right now.
Look for an old little blue Subaru wagon
parked in the community center lot.
I usually fish the slot under the bridge or
the slot in front of the patio.

I just wanted you all to know that I'm VERY offended at all that is implied here.

I happen to be a very happy employee of McDonalds (fantastic corperation too dangit!!!). It is also my responsibility to make the coffee in the mornings. images/icons/mad.gif Just so you know, I've had plenty of great comments about my coffee. In fact, there are people that come just for that, and to visit. McDonalds is basically a social pilar in my community to many of our great patrons, and it all revolves around the coffee many times. Personally, thats the only coffee I drink (with the exeption of starbucks).

Just wanted to let you know that I feel stomped on here, and my pride is a little damaged. I'll make sure to try and make some reaaaaaallllll special coffee for ifisherman next time images/icons/mad.gif

btw, I get paid VERY well (just got a raise to 7 p/h) And I get STOCK OPTIONS TOO!! images/icons/mad.gif Mac D's is awsome.

I wonder what it would take to have nutritional and country of origin information on the package?

It took some doing, but I was able to come up with this:
Big Mac: 590 calories, 45 grams carbohydrate (which McDonalds says can substitute for fruit in a health diet), 26 grams of fat, 100 mgs of cholesterol and 890 mgs of sodium.
Large fries: 400 calories, 46 grams of carbohydrate, 22 grams of fat, 200 mgs of sodium.
Chocolate shake: 320 calories, 66 grams of carbs, 240 mgs of sodium.

Total for a meal: 1310 calories, 157 grams of carbs, 100 mgs cholesterol, 48 grams of fat and 1330 mgs of sodium.

Stated another way, based on the FDA dietary guidelines, that 65% of daily caloric needs, 66% of fat, 30% of cholesterol and 150% of sodium.

No information on the effects of corporate farming on the small farms of this and other countries was available at www.mcdonalds.com, (http://www.mcdonalds.com,) however, there is an extensive section devoted to corporate responsibility.

Since we know that excess fat and sodium in the diet lead to heart disease and high blood pressure, it's easy to conclude that what may taste good may not be healthy for you.

Okay, here is the reason that many (but not all) McDonalds and other restaurants suck: corporate greed. They are looking so hard for any extra money they can squeeze out of the consumer that they forget about taking care of their employees and customers, and end up making less money than they would otherwise make. I know this for a fact because I have worked for restaurants like that. One place I worked at was making money hand over fist by taking good care of the customer, but ended up taking a nose dive when new ownership came and tried to squeeze every nickle out of the place. Now there are only 2 restaurants left out of 15 10 years ago.

A good example, the coffee at McDonalds: some schmuck in the marketing department came up with the idea of holding the coffee at a temperature way to high to keep the coffee tasting good, so that customers would walk into the place and smell the coffee and feel welcomed and at home. The only problem is that the compounds that give coffee its fresh taste are driven out of the coffee by the heat, and floating around in the air, instead of gliding past your tongue when you drink it. They completely forgot that coffee is for drinking not sniffing.

Most restaurant managers suck. It's a fact. I've been working in the restaurant industry most of my adult life, and I can tell you for a fact that they don't do their jobs. In fact, I won't tell you what restaurant I work for because most of the restaurants in that chain suck. Mine does not because I take care of good employees, who in turn take care of the customers, who come back, bring their friends, and continue to spend money. The key to good restaurant management is taking care of your employees, and taking care of your customers. If you do that, the money will follow. Most restaurant companies put the money first, though, and the customers and employees get ticked off, and so the money doesn't come. My restaurant has increased sales 50% in 4 years, and this year we doubled our profits over last year. Our health inspection scores are always in the high 90's, and they really have to hunt to find anything to put on the inspection sheet so it looks like they were doing their job. And the only thing I did was take care of the employees and the customers. That's all it takes.

Unfortunately, with a big corporation like McDonalds, the accountants take over and they end up not doing as well as they could. There are many restaurant managers like me, going against the grain and doing it right, and many restaurant employees like Johnny doing the same, but by and large restaurants suck.

The next time you go out to eat, bear this in mind: It takes a long time to shut down a restaurant. Health code violations have to be repeated and critical before that happens, and the inspections are not frequent enough in my opinion. One place near my restaurant was shut down for a week to clear out a rat infestation. A waitress working for me who had worked at that restaurant said that they had rats and cockroaches for over a year.

Okay, I'm done venting about the state of the restaurant industry. When you go out to eat, look at the cleanliness of the parking lot, windows, floors, tables, etc. as you walk in, and the friendliness of the staff. If it's not up to par, eat elsewhere, because if they won't take care of what you can see, just think of how they take care of what you can't see. Foodborne illnesses can kill you!

Great post Happy'. The 'bottom line' in this country is all too often an ugly, harmful, and even deadly syndrome. It's hepititus A from McMinimum wage workers that don't even want to waste their time washing their hands after deficating, and the ecoli virus that invades beef and other foods that are processed with sloppy cost cutting methods - and I am still getting burgers on occassion that are reddish pink in the middle after asking for a well done one mid-level resturants such as the Char-Burger in Cascade Locks (not at McD's or Burger King where they at least cook the meat enough, before slapping them into the hep A 'buns' images/icons/rolleyes.gif ). You are running your biz right; thanks! ...

Oh oh, I feel a rant coming on images/icons/shocked.gif . (weak or closed minded people adverse to bothersome truths quickly click on another thread) >>>

The ugly ********* at the top of the corporate world continually put consumer safety well below the seemingly intractable 'highest profit potential' motus operendi. The list is endless, but I will post just a couple examples for any would be doubters ...

The tabaco industry has for many years hidden studies that proved cigarette smoking had a strong causal effect toward terminal lung cancer - including second hand smoke around other family members and co-workers. Hard core investigations also revealed these lying corporate killers even spiked the addictive substances in them to make it monumental for the addicted to be able to quite smoking. And that they targeted the nation's youth in not-so-subliminal advertising. I HATE these ugly greed monsters! Everyone knows what faction in Congress enabled these constituents to go on with this hugely profitable death machine, but I won't get back into the political winless arguing posts about that - I just thank God for guys like Oregons's Ron Wyden (D - Senator). >>>

Another example is the utter criminal ugliness that lead to families literally burning alive to horrible deaths in their cars! And for what? So the big greedy power ***** in command of corporate auto manufacturing could use cheaper parts in order to increase the profits, despite tests that revealed the risks - so they could give themselves multi-million dollar profit performance bonuses each year. Other safety oriented parts are made cheaper so many other types of fatal car accidents have occured. I HATE these ****s with all my heart! What were the responses to the million dollar out of court settlements to the victims? Dollars that could have made safer cars went to "that" party in Congress to limit damage awards in victim's lawsuits! And more dollars have gone into attempting legislation that would limit NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) from making auto manufacturer's recalls for safety improvements - which lowers corporate profits. What in the **** goes on in their consciencousless minds? > "To **** with saving other's lives; I want my fourth luxo car and my second and third mansions in the hills and on the beach; and more and more and more. Yipeeeee."!

AAAAAAAAARRGGGGGGGGG!!! images/icons/mad.gif And that's just the safety issues which are the ugliest of the ugly. We have already been thru the subject of author and filmaker Michael Moore's "Downsize This" and "The Big One" ruination of families lives in the name of huger profits. images/icons/mad.gif images/icons/mad.gif I hate them almost as bad as the terrorists, who strike quicker without warning. (I told you to click off if you have trouble with the ugly truth)

Johnny youre right about the real estate. I forget the founders name, but i read it in Robert Kiyosaki book where the guy told a group of people just that.
Mcdonalds can sell hamburgers better than anyone else in the world. The burgers suck, but they have the business plan. You think mcdonalds is gonna let anyone start a franchise and change anything to make it better? Not likely. Mcdonalds will always be the biggest and will always be in business as long as they want because nobody else has the business plan they have. They can sell cheeseburgers for 10 years at 29 cents and still make money. Good for them. You dont have to eat there. images/icons/smile.gif
I dont think if they cared more about the customer and had less greed they would make more money. Nobody else has done that. Lots of places make better burgers, most places actually, but none of them area as sucessful. It doenst matter how good the product is, it matters how good the business is.

Actually, Sean, making better burgers does make more money. If you cut your profit margin by 20 percent, but double your sales you will come out ahead. The best way to decrease your food cost is to increase your sales. If you have to throw away 5 burgers a night, it's a higher percentage of your sales if your sales are low, and a lower percentage of your sales if they are high. You are also better able to control your labor cost if your sales are higher because each person you add is a smaller percentage of the total labor cost. You can fine-tune your staffing a lot easier. And if your sales are higher, your fixed costs, such as real estate, utilities, etc. become a smaller portion of your overall costs, and your profits therefore increase as well. Every time I go in to turn around a new restaurant, that is always the first priority- raising sales by keeping the customer happy. On the other hand, if you tick your customers off, then you can see your labor costs rising, your food cost rising, and your fixed costs rising as a percentage of your sales, and your profits go down both as a percentage of your sales and as an absolute dollar amount.

It always pays to keep the customer happy in the restaurant business. That is, or should be, the major portion of the business plan.

Sorry Johnny, no matter what you do in real life you now have set yourself up to be the official burger-flipper here at iFish. You brought it onto yourself, so just say it with a smile now.

It is all about cost for large corporations. It is cheaper for a company to settle individual lawsuits out of court quietly than it is to implement stop-gaps that keep the problems from happening in the first place. There were rumors flying around that within a week of 11 September United Airlines had already mailed out $25K checks to the next of kin of those killed in the crashes. I really hope it wasn't the case, but I at the same time wouldn't be surprised if it did happen.

Pardon me for getting a little too heavy and off subject above. I will start a new lighthearted McD thread that is a little more fish related.

I once heard this and tend to believe it...... McD's has it's own potato farms that the gov't subsidizes then they process them and sell them at over inflated prices.
Kinda funny how you can buy a Big Mac for 99cents but those fries will be $1.50.
They're making money off the fries twice.
And what about the lawsuit pending that states that they mislead all the vegetarians by using lard to cook the fries.
Now I don't agree with vegetarians (although they have all the rights in the world to choose what to eat, and I support that) you don't tell people that you're using veg. oil to cook the fries and then use lard.
