I am just back from a two-week trip to Christmas Island and Hawaii. I only fished Christmas Island.

Typical bonefish (I’m with Nareau).

My wife Terrie with her first bonefish (she is with our guide for the day, Tyrone). She caught larger bones, but I wasn’t around to snap a photo of the larger fish.

One of three large GT (Giant Trevally) from the trip; this one weighs approx 20 pounds. Another GT was larger but we didn’t bring a scale, so we really don’t know how large it was…

This is a “baby” GT at only four pounds, but I caught it on my eight-weight rod. It fought harder than any bonefish of that size.

Welcome back, Andy! You caught a lot more fish the last two weeks than I did. Glad you and Terrie had a great time. Wish you could bring some of the sunshine back with you.

Back to steel now. The action is picking up.

Very nice! and thank you for sharing the trip with us. I have heard those bonefish and GT have twice the fight as any trout.

Nice photos Andy! I guess you're going to have a hard time getting back to winter steelheading now! Those were beautiful fish and the weather didn't hurt I'm sure. See you on your favorite river this weekend, Meskel and I will be there.

I love the pictures Andy.....makes me green with envy!

I've been freezing my butt in the Midwest for the last 2 weeks and haven't touched a fly rod for close to a month.

"Christmas Island"?!!!, - yeah right!

What's next, trip reports from the "Island of Misfit Toys"? If this is a real place then somebody needs to prove it to me by providing round-trip airfare :D.

Christmas Island looks to be the Holy Grail of saltwater fly fishing, to be sure. Nice feesh. The GT's look plain mean and I heard they are screamers. Big bucks to fish there so it's not in my immediate future but it's a "someday" place!

Good stuff! I have been down twice. Once between Christmas and New Years and once on the full moon in August. The August full moon is when the Trevally are theoretically spawning on the flats. I don't know about that but there were definitely more big boys in August.

I would like to go back some day.

Low temperature of 72 at night and a high of 80 during the day.

Catching Bonefish, Blue Fin and Giant Trevally and a variety of other flats fish on the flats between the beach and the coral reef:

Yeah, I kept thinking someone would pinch me and wake me up!

Never been, but it looks like paradise. For someone who grew up fishing for trout and steelhead, the bonefish is possibly the perfect quarry. I think they are my favorite fish. Its not every day you get run deep into your backing on an 8wt by a five pound fish. Oh and the climate they prefer isnt bad either. Getting pretty excited for Costa Rica as I write this. Nice pics andy, thanks for sharing -FF
