View Full Version : Salmon R. report...ANTI-CORKY plunkers need not read!!!!

Didn't mess with the crowd right at 101 bridge, I heard they took a lot of fish today, though. Fished in the briar patch, my partner got one 15-16lb buck, pretty bright fish. There were 8 fish on the bank in that hole when I left at 11:30am, 4 on corkies and 4 on spinners. For anyone who cares, there were a total of 6 other fish snagged by spinner fishermen, 0 snagged by corkies. When you get a group of good fishermen who know what they're doing, and don't jerk at every line rub, you CAN catch biting fish on plunking corkies.....if you don't agree, you've never done it, period. Enough said.
I'll be in the same spot in the morning. There's an absolutely amazing amount of fish in there, and surprisingly, mostly good, bright fish.

I read it anyway. images/icons/grin.gif Nice job of hooking them in the beak.

I'm with The Rogue. I have fished there many a time with him and can attest that corky plunkers do catch fish legally. It can be ugly there sometimes though with the wrong crowd. Heck, I've seen flyfishermen snag fish. Not trying to step on any toes, but its not just the "meat" fisherpeople that snag.

Rogue,
Instead of using corkies and flossing those nooks. Use a large Spin-n-Glow with a hootchie packed with Pro-Cure Herring butter. Plunk it on a hard running tide. I bet you hook more fish.
Sorry about the flossing comment Im just poking fun at you. images/icons/smile.gif
The only way I will ever fish the Salmon river again, Is to go out to the mouth and troll. There are just too many idiots on that river for my taste.

Thanks for the report!
Plunking corkies is the only way I've ever caught them on the Salmon.
For willierower: key word "plunking" images/icons/wink.gif
It's hard to floss them when it plunked. images/icons/tongue.gif
Some times there ain't enough current to work a spin glo where TheRogue is talking about.

Was back again this morning...like a completely different river. Fish seemed to melt away right at daylight, they probably went upriver, where they didn't catch squat yesterday. Funny how fish will move around, even with no weather or water change from day to day.
Saw three fish caught, had to convince the guy next to me that that tap, tap, tap of a trout on his rod was really a salmon....he was jerking on every hard swim through line bump, but missing out on the real bite. He did land the fish, and I've educated one more "snagger" on how these fish really act.

Mojet,
The tide needs to be running hard to get the spin-n-glow working. It also seems to work better on an incoming tide. Ive never used it from the bank, In fact Ive never fished the Salmon River from the bank.
If you or the Rogue want to get some good info about a place on the Salmon, Shoot me an e-mail and I will tell you. I stumbled across it a few years back. Its always paid when I hit it right.

Willierower,
Thanks for your offer on "secret" images/icons/wink.gif spots but I think I have lost gear in all of them a time or two. I've fished the river from boat and bank. What I need more than anything else is a secret technique, short of a Dupont spinner, that will guarantee me a fish in the cooler! images/icons/shocked.gif I am so overdue it is pathetic. It's almost too embarassing for me to tell anyone that I actually went fishing anymore.
Still, I could never stoop so low as to snag one or floss a fish. However, I am not below begging a filet from those more successful. images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif

I still just don't get how people say I "floss" a fish while plunking, where I can't see the fish!!! Now I realize that some fish do swim around, open and closing their mouths on occasion, but get real!!!!
Like I said, if you've never been there, and been with someone who knows what they're doing, ie, short leader, when to set and when to just watch your pole slowly bend and leave it alone.....you can't complain. Period.

I agree with Kyle.
I dropped by Irrigon fish hatchery to see what the local scene was like. Not much happening.
I think I recognized my first "line rub." It didn't feel like a abite, but something was there. I figure, if it's not a bite, I'm not setting the hook.

You got it Vinny....if it don't feel right, it probably isn't!! Do I miss a bunch of fish that are taking it in the mouth?? Probably, but it's too frustrating to me and those around trying to fish, when I tie up the hole with a foul-hooked salmon.

Mojet,
Sounds like you're having a rough go of it. I fished there on Saturday. Try chucking spinners. I have a lime green tubing that I put on a siwash hook with a size 5 Metric. It has accounted for a few limits on the salmon for me. It's something about the green. Anyway on saturday I brought an insanely Chrome 27lb hen in and missed two others. Fish the lower river and bring a lot of spinners cause it's snaggy. I snagged a couple of crabs while fishing to give you an idea of how deep and slow I was fishing.

T-Rogue,
I definitely agree that a plunked corkie is definitely not flossing. The salmon I used to catch there "use to" being the operative word, were all caught plunking corkies and yarn. I swear, if it weren't for the yarn getting tangled in their toothies, I would never have known that I even had a bite, since it is such a subtle take. A rod with a soft tip and tons of backbone is helpful too.
Ramstrong,
You must have been fishing pretty low to catch crabs! images/icons/shocked.gif I hope they were ocean types and not crotch crickets! images/icons/shocked.gif Were you below the Glass House?

The spot is not really a secret,If youve been in a boat you have went right by it. Its just a place that nobody ever fishes.
Since I dont fish the salmon anymore I will just tell you.
Down river from the Glass house hole there is a big log jam in the middle of the river. Plunk Kwikfish on the south side of it on a low outgoing tide. This only works good late in the evening or right at daylight. What happens is, The fish move in on the incoming tide and hang out on the long flat below the log jam ( which is a good area to troll at high tide). When the tide changes and starts getting low, All the fish move up through the narrow channel and you basically cork them off. You need to put your lures n the narrowest spot, The fish have to swim through your stuff to
get by. You will see the making wakes in the shallow water as they make thier way up. The excitment factor goes through the roof when you see a wall of water coming upstream at you. It really gets exciting when a big fresh nooks eats you Kwikfish that is sitting in 2 feet of water. Once you hook one its a real challenge to land. There are logs and stumps everywhere.
Use a stout rod with some strog line, You have to put the screws to them when you hook them.

Dave,
I was in fact below the glass house. I guess friday was phenominal. Saturday was ok. I still can see that purple/chrome sided toad flashing just below the surface in my minds eye. Just a beatiful fish fresh off the tide with long tailed sea lice all over. The only thing that sucked was carrying her all the way back to the highway, but I'll live with that images/icons/wink.gif Anyway next time we get any rain I'm sure it's going to light up. I was a happy camper because the salmon hadn't really produced anything for me since 1998.

Willie Rower...
Thanx for that little tidbit...I always wondered why more boats didn't anchor up and run KwikFish when the tide's moving. Some of the corner would be ideal spots for it. I've never had a boat up there, because I've always been worried about banging it off everything.
I'm on the lookout for a 10-12 ft. aluminum that would fit in the back of my pickup. I'm always on the lookout for a better way to catch fish, I'd drop all my corkies in the garbage can if there was a more consistent producer out there that didn't go against the flow of the crowds.
