I witnessed the poaching of geese today at where I work on the Columbia river. These guys were on a game refuge and were ground shushing these birds. I got a good look at their boat and what they looked like. They had two dogs with them one black and one brown. They were in a bright red 19-20ft. jet sled with a windshield. Their boat stood out like a sore thumb. Besides being in broad day light. This area also is within the Fairview, Troutdale city limits. The police said that they didnt have the man power to investigate. I told them they could catch them red handed since they had the only bright red boat on the river. Still no one came. This all happen in a matter of five minutes. They got out of the boat, shot the birds , loaded up and left (like they were doing something illeagle). I made my report as I watched this all go down. images/icons/mad.gif I tried to be the honest citzen. That was the first time I had ever turned in a poacher and will probably will be my last. Thats my hard earned tax dollar at work. images/icons/mad.gif I hope I see these guys on the river so I can point them out to everyone. images/icons/grin.gif Like the president says " you can run but, you cant hide" Theres no room for scum here. If you know who these guys are,do us all a favor, and please turn them in. Thanks,.........Fishhead Vic .....PS What they did I think was a felony. images/icons/mad.gif

Ther cops were probaly busy. Well maybe. Please do not stop turning in poachers because the cops were unable to come. If possible next time try to get a picture or video of it. Those jerks are making honest outdoors people look like scum. We must stop them.

It doesn't matter what color you are, if your doing something wrong it needs to be cut off ASAP. images/icons/mad.gif
I am from Montanan originally, let me tell ya, I have the poaching hotline number memorized. There are way too many idiots out there with the attitude that it is not a big deal if they do something like that.
No patience for that kind of people. How responsive is ODFW to poaching when you call them?

While were on the subject of scum, I just read the latest "foot in mouth" statement from the reverend Jerry Fallwell. According to this idiot, God let the terrorists attack the US because of the activities of civil liberties groups, women's groups and abortionists, etc. President Bush quickly called these types of statements highly inappropriate.
Just a reminder that idiots like the Taliban exist in our own society and spew their venom under the guise of Christianity. If Jerry Fallwell had his way we'd all be living in a country run by religious extremists, without civil liberties and required to follow rules based on their own medieval interpretation of "religious law". Sound familiar?
Let's not forget that there are extremists in all religions, or at least that hide behind the guise of religion. Let's also not forget that almost all followers of almost all religions are good people. It's only a few bad apples that use religion for evil and give religion a bad name.

Fishhead,
Thanks for turning in the poachers! Keep it up! The only way to stop these "low life's" is to keep on letting the officials know of their activities. Maybe one day we'll see someone from law enforcement get involved and at least attempt to stop all the poaching! Take care.

Last month while fishing by Beacon Rock we witnessed some people fishing for sturgeoun after the season had closed to the retention of them. We got on the VHF and contacted a OSP officer. We directed him, from our boat right to where the Poachers were. He took their fish and wrote them up and then thanked us for the tip. Made us feel like we made a difference. The long and the short is that as long as you do your part to stop poachers you've done your part

The September goose season is still open. The "refuge area" that I can think of in that area allows waterfowl hunting. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

You called the wrong uniforms! City cops could give a rat's *** about dead geese.
Next time, call the State Police...they are the ones primarily responsible for game law enforcement. Also, the sherrifs would be interested and the guys on those sherrif boats are way bored; had you called the river patrol they'd have been all over it.
One other suggestion....provided you have not identified yourself, as a general rule, when law enforcement fails to do their job, simply inform them that you are armed, will make a citizen's arrest, and will call back when the prisoners are secure...That gets them going every time!

I almost forgot... ask the dispatcher "is it legal to shoot them if they flee or only if they shoot at me first?"...guaranteed code 3 response.

Assuming you meant "sluicing" the geese on the ground I believe this is legal also, although considered unsportsmanlike by some

This is to answer some of your questions. #1 Yes, I called the river patrol first thing. #2 Yes, I called the state police on the TIP( Turn In Poachers)program number. #3 Then I called the KGW news room. #4 Tilla, this area is within a mile of a housing development. That is land that was donated to the metro green space by James River. As far as I know that is a wildlife refuge. Those poor geese probably thought that those guys were going to feed them and all they got was lead. images/icons/mad.gif #4 Salmonator, Yes thats what I meant. Those guys not only were poachers but unsportsman like too. images/icons/mad.gif #5 Besides all the above this was private property none the less, if it wasnt part of a green space wildlife refuge. If these guys were doing something legal then why did they pack their stuff so quickly and get the hell out of there so fast?????? They were dead wrong and should have to face the music!!!! In my book these were scum!!!!!! images/icons/mad.gif images/icons/mad.gif images/icons/mad.gif
