The Floatilla III is really heating up as OR vs WA. Cool! They are organizing some heavy hitter teams. Read at least the second page of "FLOATILLA III - Slaughter on the Water" and get some 3 man driftboat teams ready for the Satsop River on Oct. 6th. It's a great river (been written about in former STS issues and was filmed for a Fishing The West coho fishing episode)! It's about 1 hour and 45 minutes from the I-5 bridge over the Columbia if you move right along - allow 2 hours though. The early morning meeting place will be the lower launch by the Hwy. 12 bridge (same as for F-I). Coming up from the south on I-5 take the Hwy. 12 exit west (about 5 miles north of Centralia). The 'Sop bridge on H 12 is between Elma and Montesano. We can still use the driftboats if F-III switches over to the Cowlitz or NF, and available sleds can be brought out to replace some of the driftboats for those bigger rivers; but the D-boats still will work well on those rivers - especially with a trolling motor to get back up and recover schools of fish. Get after it and post over on that thread. There will be prizes this time. images/icons/smile.gif Thanks.

RT,
Are you saying that the Satsop River is going to be primarily a sled trip? Or if the River gets changed to the Cowlitz or NF. Then it will be a DB trip, I get easily confused.

I know I want to be on a 3 man team and catch them fish. Who else is a available? I fished with Phunybonz on Floatilla II. Are you still around? Any body else?

Steve would love to go but that Saturday is Cindy's birthday party. That wouldn't go over very well if I went fishing that day. Don't need to go there.

From above, "Get after it and post over on that thread." Yes 'boater', some things do indeed speak for themselves. images/icons/rolleyes.gif http://home.nexgo.de/gifs/simpsons/simpsons051.gif

Smiley, if the Satsop is at normal early October levels it too will support sled use on the lower river. So any of the 3 candidate rivers can be fished well with sleds or driftboats - and in some spots quite well from the bank for anyone not hooking up a boatride (bankers can still meet at the takeout to go to any after fishing event) images/icons/smile.gif .

Dang Mark, we could use a good OR fisher like you. But Cindy is certainly the priority. Happy B-day early Cindy images/icons/smile.gif . Talk with you two soon. - Steve

Edit: Hey Marty, those 4 silvers look exactly like the ones in the pic you posted for us a while back - the ones you caught in Quilsene Bay the easy way images/icons/grin.gif . I'm not suggesting you'd stoop to using those same 4 fish pictured form a different angle to reimpress us again - I'm saying that IS what you did images/icons/grin.gif Same lawn, same hose, same fish. ... Hey, when will you guys that post huge screen eating pics cut down on the size of them so it doesn't make us have to scroll our @$$&$ off to read the rest of the posts, and cause so much download time?!? images/icons/rolleyes.gif

I'll be there. If I bring my sled I will have an open seat. RT. Should I bring the sled or the db?

Looks like I will be there with a co-worker. He has to get a kitchen pass but most likely no problems.

Since he is going to be doing all the driven and neither one of us has been there what is there to expect as far as difuculties on the river?

Steve....If I don't sell the driftboat...I might head that way...but I think I got a hot biter on it tho. Could my score here in Oregon count for the Oregon team?? The river down here should be THICK with them...could easily land 12 fish here. Let me know...Mark

I have a seat open in my DB, anyone that has drifted the sop would be a great addition as I have not been on that river.

NOTE: F III is not a derby or fishing contest, for which we would have to apply to the WDFW for a permit. This is a fun social event. There is no law against bragging rights or even some gifts of appreciation and brotherhood. images/icons/wink.gif

Rags and FM Mark, if F III gets switched to the Cow or NF the sleds are definitely the way to go, both to cover more water quicker and also to have more fishers along. If the 'Sop gets the rain it should by then, it's a tough decision. The driftboat runs have the nicer defined holes, which could also have more fish in them if the fish are on a quick move. However, the lower mile or two of holes on the Satsop R. are sled accessable and is commonly done, and they are good holes (the "Fishing The West" TV show filmed on the Satsop was in a sled with a guide). You also can fish sleds off the mouth out in the big Chehalis R. and do very well on the silvers headed both for the 'Sop and on up the Chehalis. And again, sleds carry more fishers/rods. If you have a 3 person team I would make the decision based on the latest fishing reports that week before the 6th. FM, you should get Stew and another good fisher or two and get after this thing with us. Fun! ... And all these rivers can be effectively bankfished too, for those that aren't hooked up to a boat ride - and can meet at the take out with the boaters. LOTS of great fish! Gonna be fun regardless!

hey rags,
Get some sleep before this Floatilla. And if you need to head to the bank to take care of buisness, Make sure it isnt on private property, Or at least make sure the land owner doesnt see you images/icons/grin.gif .

RT,
How are we going to determin who gets the prizes? I vote we give a prize for the biggest fish. A prize for the team with the most wieght (add all fishes weight and divide by the # of team members). A prize for the smallest fish.
I also would like to see an award for the dumbest move of the day. Im sure you will take that whenyou fall down and roll down the boat ramp and into the river. images/icons/grin.gif

snapset,
Where you headed to this weekend? And what day you headed back. Im going to Kalama on sunday and I plan on fishing the Lewis monday. From what Ive been hearing the Lewis is red hot at the moment. The Kalama has plenty of fish, but they are suffering a serious case of lock jaw.

My fishing partner was not able to a kitchen pass for the floatilla because of his darn anniversary. I am without a ride at this point.
Do you still have room for one more large person? images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Hey Bug', 'Stew, and O.C.', we should get your team, Spooled and my's team, and some other Oregon teams to meet somewhere around Janzen/I-5 bridge 2 hrs. before meeting time at the Hwy. 12 'Sop parking lot. Since there will be NO launching ahead of time to secure the honey holes (or the whole deal is off with that kind of crap - and we can turn around and head for another river - and same for any boat racers that deliberately keep rowing ahead of the Floatilla to have all the good holes first all the way thru; as far as I'm concerned, such non-sportmen can be DQ'd from the event) the Waaaasie's will be gathering at the lowest Satsop take out by 12, and we can arrive in an intimidating procession with someone blowing a "charge" trumpet (BUGGLEBOY?) images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif . That otta scare 'em ... not! Whatever you guys prefer though. images/icons/smile.gif - RT

Edit: Yes 'boater, what only you could miss is that means the Satsop R. will be open for 5 days before the Floatilla event ocurs. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Count me and at least one friend in for a drift down the 'Sop(?). Personally not familair with this one but could try to schedule a drift down after Oct. 1. Any trouble spots, shuttles or good put in to know about? Is this a steelhead party, or just silvers? Can a Duck and Beaver fan ride together? We seem to do o.k so far, but that date is after a few more games! images/icons/wink.gif GO BEAVS! images/icons/grin.gif

That sounds great! I will give a testosterone filled rip on the elk buggle images/icons/wink.gifto announce our commanding presence to those Washington boys at the ramp. A drift boat carravan starting in Portland would be cool.

Also you all have a few weeks to get your ifish stickers if you haven't already. Just to let the people (public) know what is going on.

As far as leading the boats down the river. Good sportsmanship would dictate that once you got first shot at a hole you fish it or others untill most of the boats have gone down an had thier shot.

Are you coming to the Floatilla?

RT,
We will be another team from Oregon, STZ II, Drachir, and an unspecified 3rd member to be named at a later time. We have never fished the Satsop, so we won't do so good I'm sure. We are just out for the fun and to see a new river. We catch our share on the N. Lewis & the Clackamas, so we will catch fish, but not so easy on a new river. We could use some help with directions, and some of the good holes to fish.
Are there any campgrounds with RV Hookups near the Satsop? Let me know via e-amil.

Glad you're coming. I will be doing a scout drift or two prior to the event on Oct. 6th. I will make up an Oregon participants e-mail list to send out some info about the river sections and techs - to help us on Waaasie turf a little. I will make one suggestion right now - have some Amerman Eggs, some Blue Fox size 4 silver blade spinners, and chrome/chartreuse standard size Wiggle Warts (with bead chain extended single treble) along. These things aren't cheap, but they will get you into the hunt for a prize and glory images/icons/wink.gif . Those going that haven't posted about it can e-mail me the first week of October and I will mail out some info - just after I check if it's a WA addy or OR addy (there's a way to do that). images/icons/grin.gif

If you plan on fishing Flotilla III, and it ends up on the Satsop, please take note. Dan S. who knows the river well has confirmed that the Satsop is SINGLE BARBLESS HOOK ONLY. This includes plugs. RT's tip on the bead chain and treble hook needs to be modified if we fish the Satsop. I just don't want anyone getting a ticket because they didn't know. HEY YALL suggests, anyone from Oregon can use no hook if they would like. images/icons/smile.gif

Ooops. Thanks Troy. I wasn't aware of the single barbless hook regs on the Satsop. ... WAIT A MINUTE. You heard this from Dan S.?!? Better check with WDFW; Dan might just want us to lose our hookups. Nah, jk. Thanks for the alert Dan! And let me know if you want to be on the Satsop tips mailing list. images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif Here's one for you - the single barbless siwash hooks extended on the Wart bead chain swivel works especially well for those short striking silvers Dan. You, Jeff, and I would have landed twice as many on the Cowlitz last fall when we were too lazy to change hooks! images/icons/rolleyes.gif That's Ok though, we made up for it 'doggin em in down river. images/icons/smile.gif
