I am thinking about selling my Alumaweld Formula Vee and getting a 20 or 21 foot open boat (Super Vee, Predator or something like that). I mainly fish the Columbia multi species around the Tri-Cities area but also fish downriver and around Tillamook bay into the ocean. What should I be looking for as far as an all-around hull that can handle the big water when the wind picks up. I am assuming a 20 or 21 foot boat would need a 150 hp prop or 200 hp pump. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have a open 19' Northriver I have a 130 Honda and 46mph is top. A 150 prop on a 20' open boat will probably push you near 50mph. I am over my Coast Guard rating and I am worried if anything was to happen I would not be covered by my insurance. Any open boat is not the greatest place to be when the wind picks up. You will really have to pick your days carefully when you go out on the ocean. Get 10 or 12 degree V if you want to smooth out ride.

Willie Raptor!! One of the best all around hulls out there. Predator if you do more Shallow water fishing.

Go out in the bubble at Tillamook and see what the guides are in! 22" alumaweld Supervees. I have a 18' Supervee and I have had it out quite often. Just remember.....One bad wave to swamp the boat, anougher one to flip you over!!!!.

Make sure the bottom is at least 72" wide. More is better.
For pinpoint boat control, look no further than Willie boats. The folks there have a definate grasp on hull design.
I would suggest a prop first. The ability to pick up the bow in sloppy conditions makes a prop a MUCH better choice for rough water.

There are a number of Boat, and "Sportsman", Shows coming in early 2008, Portland's is Jan 5-13, but O'Loughlin Trade Shows lists several others in Oregon & Washington.
The Pacific NW Sportsman show (Portland) is Feb 6-10, and most of the fishing boat outfits are there.
Motion Marine is another fishing boat to look at - their DVD is awesome. Most (all?) of their 20' boats have a seven foot bottom and 29", or optional 32 inch sides.

There are a couple of Motion Marine listed in the boats and tackle, here's 1 that I could find.

I forgot about the Motion Marine boats. Those look really nice also. The boat in the classifieds would be perfect if it was a little smaller. Too much boat for me but I bet a 21' MM would fill my needs. I just don't know if a Super Vee LT would handle the rough water like I would want it to. Thanks for the replys guys.

Zack, run a boat with a prop on it. then run the same boat with a pump. The difference is huge.
As far as a 24' boat......they are small on the water, or big on the trailer. For ocean stuff(Or big water in general) longer is better.
Are you looking at new or used?

I am looking for a used boat. Something in the 20k price range. I don't want too big of a boat. I only make it to Tillamook once a year and the rest of the time is spent bass, walleye, salmon and steelheading on the upper Columbia and Snake. I think a Raptor with a prop would be perfect, but I have never ridden in one.

ZS,
If ya make it to Tilly in the near future, pm me. I'll take ya for a ride in a semi spiffy boat.

Hey Zach, I think Stevens has a 22' Willie with a 200hp Yamaha prop on it. Sweet boat. Add a T8 and your set!

Flatfish-Thanks for the offer. I won't be down that way until vacation next year, usually in mid September. I love fishing down there. A beautiful place with awesome fish. Mike-I hadn't seen that web site. A very nice boat indeed. I am going to check in with them tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.
