Someone told me you can take a short shaft motor and add extensions to make it a long shaft motor. Is this so? How much does something like this cost?

I had a Johnson that was a longshaft. It had an extension between the lower unit and the head that was a different color. I dont know who did it, I never asked. But it was for sure an add on.

You have to add a housing extension and install a longer drive shaft to the gear box...

I did it to a 1976 6 hp Johnson. I think the kit was about $40. Longer drive shaft, water up take tube, shift rod extension and housing. This was a long time ago 1986 maybe. Worked well. My Father in law did it to his a few years back I think he paid $110 for the kit.

I have a Honda 5 hp long shaft ('97, silver paint). Would like to turn it into a short shaft. Anyone want to trade parts?

I had a Johnson 20 horse that I thought needed a long shaft for a particular boat so bought the conversion kit. Ended up not needing it so it still sits here. Paid $80. Would just like to get my money back.
