I have an older Johnson 15 HP motor and decided to try to start after sitting for several months. I had a little trouble and changed the plugs. But then I did something stupid and followed the fuel line looking for some possible fuel filter to change. I found the fuel line went through this square part before going to the carburetor area. I unscrewed this part and it came apart into a few rubber diaphragm type pieces and some screws that fell into my hand. I tried my best to put it back together how it looked like it might go. I was able to get the motor to fire up for a minute then it died. It did this a couple of times and each time I had to re-squeeze the rubber ball on the fuel line near the gan to re-prime the motor. Now I can't even get it to fire up at all. Can anybody help me out on this at all? What would this part be called? Is there anybody in town that works on old Johnson motors? I feel pretty stupid - this thing always worked great before! I am totally lost! Thanks,

It's the fuel pump, go to the BRP website and you can find a parts breakdown, it should give you an idea of how to put it back together.

sorry I am so dumb, but where is the BRP website?
Thanks,

Sportscraft works on Jonnyrudes, they'd be able to help you. From my experience though, it may help you to have a few $20.00 bills hanging out of your pockets when you walk into the door asking questions. They are located under the 205 bridge on the West bank of the Willamette.

I can tell you how it's supposed to work. Maybe that and a parts diagram from BRP.COM will help you make sense of it.
The rubber diaphragm inside the rectangular block is the pump. On the backside there is a passage into the crankcase where the pressure alternates from vacuum to positive. This causes the diaphragm to pulse back and forth. On the front side of the diaphragm there is a closed chamber with a check valve on the inlet and another one on the outlet. Check valves only allow flow in one direction. These check valves are arranged so that fuel can only go toward the carb, and not back to the tank as the diaphragm pulses. When the crankcase pulls a vacuum on the backside of the diaphragm the inlet check valve opens and fuel is sucked into the pump body. When the crankcase pressurizes the back side of the diaphragm it pushes fuel out the outlet check valve to the carb.
Hope that helps.

Thanks guys -
Zeke any idea where the 2 springs go?
One is quite larger than the other one.
I think they go in between 2 different rubber diaphrams.
But of course, I am not sure.
I will try to mess with it a bit more.
Then take it to someone.
Or call one of the suggested places to see about ordering a replacement.
I appreciate all the help guys!

Rich,
I don't remember from memory where the springs go and I can't find a decent drawing on line, so I would just take the pieces in and have them put it back together, preferably with you watching. Then you can take it home and screw it back onto the engine.
